NATO kills 24 Pakistani soldiers.
With the unauthorised excursion to take out OBL (which I've no issues with) and now this, safe to say that relationships between the west and Pakistan is now at an all time low.

Why would NATO engage the soldiers unless they were firing at the helicopters.

Pure speculation on my part ....
From watching the CNN report and that the reporter stated that many US soldiers were often unsure as to where the border were and as to where they were being attacked from, maybe they accidentally crossed the border and post OBL excursion the Pakistanis (who were embarassed at that excursion) consdered that as an act of invasion and decided to open fire.
Pakistanis reporting now that it was two different checkpoint posts that were attacked.
I would have thought that with modern technology now it would be as simple as plotting the co-ordinates of the border into a computer with an alarm system when crossed ..... no?

strangely i have very little sympathy for Pakistan here. they have supporters in high levels in their government who support Al Qaeda given how long they managed to shelter Bin Laden, and have likely instructed their troops to fire at any NATO force who crosses their border for fear of another unauthorized strike within their borders
i find the government of Pakistan worse than Iran. at least with Iran you know where they stand, but Pakistan pretends to be anti-extremist while supporting their cause under the table

Yeah. I don't feel too bad about this, NATO will pursuit members of the Taliban or other groups to the Pakistan border and watch in frustration as Pakistani military opens the gates and lets them through into sheltered territory.
Pakistan's intelligence organizations have placed both sides of the fence and now they've reaped the reward if this is what happened.
Personally Pakistan can whine and complain all they want, but at the end of the day the relationship is predicated on America gives Pakistan money, Pakistan screws America over.

Actually, Pakistan has every right to be upset about this.
America is not at war with Pakistan. There is no evidence that the Pakistani government knowingly harbored OBL either.
Meanwhile America has murdered countless Pakistani civilians with their un-manned drone strikes across the Afghan border trying to target insurgents.
The U.S. would love to go to war with Pakistan to take their nukes and end their pipeline deals with Iran and China. China will not allow that however.

America should retaliate by cutting off funding and aid to Pakistan. It sounds bad when I say this, but 24 Pakistani Solider's killed is a small number compared to the Nato soldiers killed by Pakistan's games

Two conflicting versions of events.

The most disturbing part about this story for me is the buffer they have afforded Obama. If this was a republican president the story would have been: "American solidiers killed 24 Pakistani soldiers". Instead it is a NATO operation. I suppose when those drones kill civilians it is NATO drones but, when they kill a wanted target it is an American strike.

Govt's cooperation or not, 24 soldiers were killed and there is no excuse for that - especially if they were not a threat. If that's the case, investigation should be done and whoever is responsible should be put on trial.
I doubt that will ever happen - who cares right it were just 24 soldiers from some country.
And I wonder how many people would this incident cause to join the "bad" side. Imagine what you would do?

Unfortunately, they have our balls in a vice. We need them so NATO can supply themselves. So we do the dance.
Honestly, this looks like a set up by Pakistan. Who knows what they want, more money, less of "whatever", etc...???
But honestly the BSdar is going nuts here. Steps....
1)Have the Taliban suck the NATO forces into close battle near the border. (seriously, if they could suck in SEAL Team 6....they could do it again)
2)Wait for the air support.
3)Start shooting at air support.
4)Wait for the body count....
5) Go balistic
