Default Game #2: Rematch vs. Monsters

Game #2 about to begin. Heat can hopefully capitalize on this "depleted lake eerie roster".

Heat are icing the same lineup as last night.

Howse-Patterson-McMillan
Meyer-Liang-Howse
Desbiens-Byron-Rheault
Nemisz-Walter-Sylvester

Brodie-Piskula
Breen-Henry
Mikkelson-Wilson

Irving
Brown

You have Howse on two lines there.

What is going on with Wahl and Negrin? I would rather see them then Patterson or Piskula. Injured? Not playing well? Upcoming trade?

As far as I can tell, only Bancks and maybe Ortio are injured. The Heat didn't play any preseason games so I think Troy Ward is still getting a feel for everyone's talent level?

Yeah, it's on the scoresheet now, it wasn't announced at the time.

Nemisz starting the season off on the right foot with points in both games to start the season.

Into the second period now, the Heat giving themselves some serious penalty trouble. 5-on-3 immediately following another penalty. Gonna be tough here!

5-on-3 killed.

Impressive 6 straight minutes of PK there.

They did have a training camp. Maybe he wants to see a bit more of a few players before making his decision on cuts. I am fine with players like Walter and Wilson getting time. They really benefit the team.

But I would really prefer that prospects are played ahead of non-prospects if they don't bring something really good to the table.

I would rather see Negrin than Piskula, but the Heat really like what he brings.

2nd period over. Shots are 22-11 for the Heat. Still 1-0.

I think Negrin is hurt, thought I heard that somewhere. But Piskula is one tough guy! Patterson is underrated....saw him play last year a lot and was impressed. He is different than Wahl....thinking Wahl should not be on 4th line anyway. Perhaps a trade is in the works as there are too many centres. Whal could be where Laing is as well but they seem to want experience. Would like to see Nemisz, Patterson and Bouma together again. Good chemistry last year on a very young team. Still looking for some goals from this "offensive" upgrade!!

Heat win again!

Irving posts his first shutout of the season.

Paul Byron scored the only goal of the game, assists to Nemisz (2 game point streak), and Clay Wilson.

The Heat have yet to score at even strength, but have also not given up a powerplay goal on their first 10 chances.

My Three Stars,
Irving - maybe not tested an incredible amount, but 100% is what it is.
Breen - Played PK, used his stick a lot and seemed to be defensively sound.
Byron - Scored the goal, took two penalties... he was definitely involved in this one.

Brodie didn't seem to have a very good game, and the defensemen need to hit the net a lot more on those point shots.

The Heat didn't make any roster changes between game 1 and 2, it will be interesting to see how that shakes out. the lines were juggled a bit, and I'm not sure how they ended.

GO HEAT GO!

The Flames are likely expecting Brendan Morrison back soonish, so perhaps Troy Ward is waiting to see how Calgary shakes out before making decisions.

what decisions do you mean?

is wahl really at a point where he couldn't make the heat roster?? i'm thinking maybe he's not 100% healthy still.

Wahl is totally unproved at the pro level. He looked to be a dangerous threat in his final junior seasons, but he needs to adjust to playing with adults, I'd say that's his main weakness; lack of strength/experience. Even if he is 100% healthy, he's lost his spot for the moment.

An injury will put you back in the queue in the hockey development world. He's probably going to have to wait for someone to fall off before he can reclaim his spot. Look at John Negrin. I just KNOW this guy could play in the NHL. But every injury basically makes him start from the bottom again. I mean, all Breen really had to do to move up in the eyes of the franchise was stay healthy for the whole year. 73GP, second only to Baldwin (75GP) who isn't in the Flames system anymore. The best way to get noticed is to stay healthy and stay in the lineup.

I think injuries definitely set the guys back in the queue but I am not sure if that can be said about Bancks. He was out with injury last year for quite a while....maybe not as long as Whal and he (Bancks) is injured again now but the decision makers seem to really like him so he probably will get right back into the lineup. I guess time will tell.

Bancks has scored at a far higher rate at the pro level than Wahl. Abbotsford has an insanely tough travel schedule and inevitably, injuries will occur. Wahl will get a large chance this season, I'm sure.

Lake Erie coach on the Heat

Quote:
"If you talk to people around the American Hockey League, that team is as good as there is in the league," Monsters coach David Quinn said. "That's what we need to get to. We were able to play them right away, and it gives us a measuring stick.
