Icon27 Dallas Stars post-season review

Summary
Dallas had a pretty rough year. While many thought the team could contend for a top spot in the west at the start of the season the team really struggled out of the blocks and was sitting in 14th in the west with a dismal 6-13-3 (34%) record when I took over the team in early December (GM #3 for the season!). As you might expect, a lot of roster changes were made in an effort to better position the team for the 2011-2012 season. As a result, Dallas made a good number of trades between December and April and dramatically reshaped its CPHL roster.

While the roster shake up seemed to help the teams on ice performance, going 30-25-5 (54%) since I took over. The team was ultimately unable to make up any significant ground in the standings and finished amongst the leagues basement dwellers.

Looking forward
I have tried pretty hard to assemble a younger core for the Stars and I think for the most part I have accomplished that. The team is an average of 3 years younger now then it was when I took over. This focus on youth has not come with a significant reduction in average player rating as that has only dropped about .90, although I am confident that once player re-rates are complete my team will be better rated on average. I also generally ‘like’ my core players a lot more then when I took over the team, so at least I move forward with players I like if nothing else.

Dallas will continue to build around its youth in 2011-2012. Players like Krejci, Yandle, Neal, JVR and Raymond should help this team make a significant step forward next season. The playoffs are without a doubt the goal. We are expecting players like Weiss, Vermette, Bouwmeester and Hiller to continue their solid play and leadership. Dallas does not have a lot of young players that will challenge for a CPHL spot next season; however players like Ericsson, Sauer may push for the 5-6 D spot.

Prospects of note
• Jacob Markstrom (G)
o Will be graduating to the pro ranks this season. He is likely bound for the AHL but could challenge for the backup role with the main club.
o Coming off an injury filled season last season in the AHL, Markstrom is looking to rebound from Knee Surgery challenge for an NHL job.
• Richard Bachman (G)
o Coming off a very strong season in the AHL (real-life) and may also challenge to backup Hiller.
• Mattias Ekholm (D)
o Won the SEL rookie of the year in 2010-2011 and is ready to graduate to the pros, likely grabbing one of the defensive roles vacated by Ericsson or Sauer. There is an outside chance that Ekholm makes the move to North America this year and joins the Predators but it’s more likely that he will remain for another year in the SEL.
• Jacob Josefson (C)
o bounced between the NHL and AHL this last season but finished the year really strong and was one of NJD better players down the stretch. Look for Josefson to be a full-time NHL player for the devils next season playing a 6-9F two-way game.
• Other players to keep an eye on:
o J.P. Anderson (G) OHL
o Braydon McNabb (D) WHL
o Brandon Pirri (C) AHL
Heading into the Draft.
3rd rounder X 3
4th rounder X 2
5th rounder X 2

Dallas does not have a pick in the first 2 rounds. We will make an effort to change that prior to the draft though so we’ll see if we have any success. While we don’t expect this draft to be laden with top-end talent we think it is deep to the 3rd round or so. The Organization has been hard at work scouting and ranking players particularly those in the late rounds so Dallas is hopeful a gem or two will be selected.

UFA Signings
Dallas has a lot of RFA players that will need very large raises. Consequently, we don’t anticipate having very much wiggle room for any UFA players of note. That said, we will likely try our hand for a couple role players.

Thanks to all the other GMs for making the league a lot of fun and keeping it so active! I had a blast in my 1/2 season of work and am really looking forward to being involved for a full season come the fall.

I believe there was someone for a week or two but they didn't really check in and got punted. Maybe another GM can confirm this?

Yeah there was a guy for basically one day - and then he had a meltdown.

Hit the button "Print screen" when you have your spreadsheet up, then open paint, paste, and then select the area you want to show, cut it and paste it to a new paint page.

Then save the file, and upload it to photobucket or flickr.

I actually use a program called jing(made by techsmith I think). It allows you to outline an area on your screen and create either a image (as I did above) or a video of the contents of your selected area. Very handy and free.

Stars made their first move of the off-season.

In:

Brooks Orpik(rights)

Out
Ladislav Smid
2012 2nd(Edm)

Adding a shut down defender like Orpik was a need for Dallas. Orpik rounds out our top 4D (Orpik-Bouwmeester, Yandle - Spacek)

Thanks Joe for the quick deal!

Dallas has sent Jaroslav Spacek along with a small carry-on bag filled with cash to the Leafs. In exchange the Stars receive Sheldon Brookbank (really?) and a firm pat on the back.

This deal has been in the works for a couple months now. Good value for the Leafs and some needed cap space for the Stars

TOR Gets:
Spacek and 1 M in Cash

DAL Gets
Brookbank

Like we posted yesterday in the trade block, we have been looking to upgrade our blue line. We had some cap and the price to upgrade was not high. Essentially breaks down to having Spacek for 5 M. Leafs can do such a deal. It was a long time in the making, finally it made sense. Happy to do the deal.

Default mid-summer update

Dallas had made 2 moves this week to improve the D-core.

To Dallas:
Ryan Whitney
2012 3rd (dal)
1M net cap

To Carolina
Jay Bouwmeester

To Dallas
Tom Gilbert

To Buffalo
Mark Eaton
Chris Higgins
Corry Potter

The net result of these moves is an increase of 7OV in in our defensive rating. We parted ways with 3rd line winger Chris Higgins whose role will now be filled by James van Reimsdyk as well as career AHLer Cory Potter. Dallas feels both players are replaceable from within the organization.

Thanks to Doug and Mike for the quick and easy deals!

Dallas may be looking to add a bottom 6 winger before the start of the season, but as it stands the roster looks like this:

Neal(67) - Weiss(68) - Krejci(70)
Bertuzzi(66) - Vermette(68) - Raymond(67)
JVR(64) - Winnik(62) - Ward(64)
Grant(57)- Slater(60) - Kaleta(57)

Yandle(71) - Whitney(71)
Orpik(68) - Gilbert(68)
Sauer(62) - Ericsson(63)

Hiller(83)
Ersberg(67)

Sabres needed to find a solution to a bit of a blueline and 3rd line quandry that they had and the offer from Dallas was the best idea we've been able to get our head around over the last while. definitely a step down on D, but we didnt' have room for both Gilbert and Leopold. In the end we needed to move Gilbert our number 4 D, for a number 5 D a 3rd line winger who will be our top PKer and a cheap player who will compte for the 6/7 slot on our D this season. we are hoping HIggins has found new life in Vancouver and going forward beyond this year might provide better value than Gilbert, we'll see

with that move done the Sabres elected to re-sign Leopold. a tough decision for us, we considered dropping him and taking our chances at UFA but we are on holidays right now with what turns out to be dreadful internet connections and were worried we would miss round one of UFA- in the end likely not the case, but oh well. with Enstrom, Green and Leopold we have 3 of the top 30 rated D in the CPHL, solving the bottom half of the blueline is our new problem

The Stars have made a couple more moved over the past few weeks. to Recap...

In:
Nicklas Backstrom (74)
Jeff Carter(73)
Marc Staal (71)
Manny Legace (71) - UFA

Out:
Ryan Whitney (71)
David Krejci (70)
James Neal (67)
James Van Reimsdyk (64)
Jacob Josefson
2012 1st
2012 2nd

I need to fill a 3rd line winger spot but the opening day lineup is looking like this:

Vermette(68) - Carter(73) - Backstrom(74)
Bertuzzi(66) - Weiss(68) - Raymond(67)
XXXXXXXX(XX) - Winnik(62) - Ward(64)
Pisani(61)- Slater(60) - Kaleta(57)

Yandle(71) - Staal(71)
Orpik(68) - Gilbert(68)
Carkner(61) - Ericsson(63)

Hiller(83)
Legace(71)

I've paid a lot tp try and upgrade with some top-end talent. However, I've managed to keep my core players young so i'm pretty happy about that. We'll see how the moves play out in the sim.
