I just posted something similar in the Aviation thread.
I can hear it loud and clear, I can't see anything though. I have a pretty clear viewpoint but I can't see anything making that noise.

Looking on the Stamps site apparently that's it. Jets flew by after the Anthem. Completely forgot about the game today.
And kick off was 2:30pm which pretty much adds up to when I heard the sounds.

Why do they waste money on this? How expensive is it to fly a CF-18 over a football game? Can't that money be better spent on other things that don't just last a split second?

It flew right over my deck - pretty sure the pilot saluted me as he went by!
He did actually make a pretty cool turn right over my house while I was sipping a cold one on my patio. Expensive & a little overkill for a Stamps - probably. Cool? - definitely!

They need hours to maintain flight status, I see them flying overhead regularily at work an hour and half south of Fort Mac.

I love it. You know it is a big game when you get a flyover. Their timing is always immaculate. The anthem finishes and BOOM! A second of awesomeness that is unparalleled to anything you get in a domed stadium.
Wish I could be there today instead I have to settle for watching it on TV. Looks like an amazing day for a Labour Day Classic.

Not sure of the cost- I would guess somewhere in the thousands. But let's say the cost is $10K. The Stamps/CFL/TSN have all made Labour Day into an "event"- one not to be missed. So for every ticket sold over and above what they normally sell; $1.50 went to the F18 flyby.
People (myself included) often complain about how bush league the CFL is. Then they decide to do something cool, and other people start in on how the CFL should be saving money.

Assuming the CFL/Stamps/Esks/TSN etc, pay for at least a portion of the costs, its totally a good idea and likely worth the cost, considering I heard the scream of the jets and did a quick "wtf" and then realized the game was starting, so I ran to my tube and cracked open a brew.

It's a recruitment tool. It's also a great outing for students at Cold Lake to build up their hours in the airframe - if you watch the excellent documentary series Jet Stream, you'll see that the students perform a number of flights that aren't combat training related to build up their solo proficiency in the aircraft.
And I guess it gives the complainers something to complain about on a long weekend

In this article, it says a flyby of 5 F-18s costs $450,000 in the U.S.
http://www.totalprosports.com/2011/0...s-closed-roof/
So I'd estimate it would probably cost $100,000 for a single CF-18 flyby in Canada.

They would be flying anyways. What difference does it make that it was over a football game instead of a round trip to Edmonton or Moose Jaw.
