General U of C Thread
Just thought I'd make a general thread to discuss any and all things U of C, if mods feel this isn't thread worthy feel free to close it!
I'm going into my first year, and going into Haskayne. Most of my profs have non-english sounding last names which I've heard can be a very bad thing.. also not excited for a 3 hour Business and the Environment lab on Monday nights . Also it's gonna suck getting up really early on the 31st to get a parking pass

I went to Haskayne back in 2004-2005. Fun times. Didn't pay all that much attention, but through last minute cramming and all-nighter assignments was able to get solid B+ marks. Enough to get into a CA firm and get a decent job :-)
Not sure how many of the profs are still there, but they were all pretty good.
The real "business" courses won't start until your 2nd and 3rd years; the 200 level courses are just general studies stuff and stats, unless the program has changed drastically in the last 6 years.
Parking is lame....in my 5 years it increased in price and difficulty to park by a lot; can't imagine what it's like now. Now that the C-train is free again; try parking at Brentwood and just walk over; its like a 10 minute walk and you'll need the exercise - if you start eating in the food court every day, as I did
Have a blast though - they were some good years; definitely better than working full-time (although the money and toys are better when you're working). If you live at home; plan to move out after a couple years; you'll have way more fun!

Re: parking
Just take transit, cycle or hoof it. Even if it takes you 90 minutes from the deep SE, it will still save you hundreds of dollars a semester and lots of head ache.

I pretty much live in Springbank so there aren't really any viable public transport options until they put in the West leg of the LRT which won't be until December of 2012. But I'm also considering parking at Westside/Sunterra and taking transit from there. But part of the reason for getting a parking pass would be my brother and I are both going to the U of C and are on very different schedules (he's a second year sciences student) so if either of us have a late night at the university we can just drive home instead of waiting for a bus etc. Also how much does a parking pass cost? If we get a parking pass do we still have to pay for parking there?

I'm going into Haskayne as well this coming fall. I'm pretty excited and nervous at the same time, but determined to make university a fun experience!
I have the lab late on Monday as well.. not excited! I heard it doesn't occur every Monday though?

My dad is currently working with one of the profs from that class and he said it was only at the start of the semester and at the end, not in the middle at all

At least it's not Thursday or Friday. Not much happens on Monday nights. Good time for school work.

For parking, I'm not sure what the cost is now, but parking at McMahon is a steal compared to parking on the rest of campus, and it's only a 5-10 min walk to Craigie Hall. Be prepared to stand in a long line to get passes though.
The Art Parkade was $3 a day when I started in 2001, and now it's $8 a day. Quite the increase...

Dear Cheerio,
On behalf of the rest of the University, from people taking fake degrees like Philosophy to hardcore stuff like medicine and law, please for the love of god don't act like a total ######bag.
You're probably thinking, "but Cecil, why would i act like a ######?". Well Cheerio lots of kids from Haskayne wear suits to school. I imagine mostly it is a requirement as part of business classes that you take. That's cool. People in suits look totally serious and ready for business.
The problem is your ######bag bretheren in Haskayne thinks this actually makes them real businessmen responsible for million dollar deals.
No joke, I was on the train a while ago and this guy in his gaudy pinstripe suit and D&G sunglasses was yapping loud enough for the whole train to hear how awesome he was and how his business deal was crumbling. He was acting like he just sat at home at watched Boiler Room and Wall Street back to back to back for a week.
Me and the rest of the train had to put up with this gong show for about 20 minutes. Captain dbag then proceeds to hang up, say "see you in class" and get off the train with his backpack in hand.
That's right. He was talking about a class he was in. This hilarious dbag isn't a business man at all, he was a ####ing student who watched the Social Network and thought he was the second coming of Eduardo Saverin.
So Cheerio, you may have to wear a suit, do business classes and even have some courses where a small business venture will be undertaken by you and your classmates.
But please, for the love of god, this does not make you an actual businessman who makes 7 figures and drives an SL500. It makes you a poor student who gets laughed at behind his back by the rest of the campus, who are all wearing pajama pants and eating ramen noodles BTW.
Thanks,
The rest of the U of C student body.

Attended U of C from 2005-2010
Favourite place to study: 3rd floor MacKimme Tower
Favourite place to take a dump: (I consider this to be privileged information. There are some real hidden gems out there not to be shared with just anyone) 2nd floor Math Sciences, 3rd floor Mac Hall (next to Grad lounge), top floor Haskayne. Honourable mentions: Olympic Oval washrooms (upper level), bottom floor Social Sciences, Earth Sciences +15...depends on the time of day though of course.
Favourite food: Bake Chef - SUBS, pepperoni bun, tuna bun
Favourite profs: Janzen, Glasberg, Chastko, Mackay-Panos, K Young, and that lawyer who teaches BSEN amongst other classes. His wife is also a prof. Thought he was pretty awesome.

Attended UofC 1988-92 and 1996-99, and I have nothing relevant to contribute. The Elbow Room in SS used to be a great place to play some bridge or euchre, that's all I got...

I got more done in the Den than in the main study hall in Haskayne.

I put fruit flies in the vending machines way back when Haskayne was called Scurfield Hall. Let me know if there are still a thriving colony of flies in that building.

I went to Haskayne for 5 years (went back for the victory lap....), and the only people wearing suits were the MBA students, which is probably because they just finished work.... Maybe the guy you saw on the train was finished work for the day and going to his night MBA classes?
The only other time the rest of Haskayne students were in suits was during group presentations at the end of each semester, when it was required. So say, two days per semester, Haskayne students wore suits. The rest of the time we were all wearing our sweat pants and eating ramen noodles like "the rest of the U of C student body".... Every faculty has their Dbags. For some reason Haskayne gets a bad reputation but I definately didn't see a difference between kids in Haskayne and kids in engineering/kinesiology/whatever. You make it sound like we were a bunch of Gordon Gekkos walking around on our cellphones shouting buy and sell like we were on trading floors.
