As crude as the shuttle looks mechanically, the software it runs is about as close to perfect as any piece of software ever written.

This is a great article on how the software that runs the shuttle:

The Shuttle was designed in the 1970s. For much of it's lifetime, it didn't even have glass cockpit instrumentation.
