Default Lawn Care Help/ Suggestions.

Im pretty sure that I am not the only person who enjoys keeping their lawn in great shape on CP, but I have noticed that my grass is getting attacked by damn dandelions and crab grass. Since Alberta no longer allows things like Weed'n'Feed (I gave my last bottle to my dad a month or so ago) does anybody have any feed back on the natural weed killers that we are forced to buy now and how they work?

Alberta doesn't allow Weed'n'Feed? I've been spraying the crap out of my lawn with some kind of weed killer spray with awesome results. Before I started going at the weeds I checked the City of St. Albert webpage and there didn't seem to be anything against it.

The herbicide-fertilizer combos are supposed to be disallowed.

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/cps-spc/pubs/.../index-eng.php

I keep seeing the bottles of Killex and Roundup on the shelves at Canadian Tire and Walmart, so there's that. You can always spot spray weeds and fertilize separately.

I sprayed my dandelions with Killex (I used to pull them but spent an entire afternoon yanking them only to notice that it looked like I hadn't pulled a single one) and yet the fataing things still popped seed heads this week - they look like hell but I'm amazed. Maybe they need more spray? Luckily I'm renting and will be moving to a fresh property soon. Thank goodness.

I too am a bit of a perfectionist with my lawn - I'm "that guy" in the neighborhood, so I know exactly what you mean.

I've moved from fertilizing and spraying for weeds myself and hired The Weed Man this year. Now I don't need to worry about which product is going to work the best with the new regulations, they simply guarantee the results. I haven't had the first weed spraying yet, (I sure need it though with the invasion of dandelions starting), but early fertilizer results are positive.

Yeah my lawn needs to be perfect as well. This year I hired Green Drop. $199 for four services. I heard Weed Man is $170. Seems like awesome value to me.

this is what you want; hooks up to your garden hose, and you just spray your entire yard. there is also a version with crabgrass killer as well, but it usually a little more expensive

Chelated iron (Weed'B'Gon) works very well. If you're paranoid about 24D, this is an excellent alternative. It is however extremely, horribly expensive. I find it needs two treatments for totally kill dandelions.

Of course 24D has been studied to death, while who knows about chelated iron.

Oh yea, for you outside of Alberta, check the bottle, because Weed'B'Gon was also the name of another formulation.

Don't forget to give your neighbours yard a little squirt too for good measure.

I'd go with weedman personally. Cheaper and better, longer lasting product.

Default Lawn care etiquette?

Thought that I'd put this in here...but what do you guys figure the appropriate times are for mowing and such in terms of etiquette? I fIgure 9am to 9pm is about right? I had a neighbor fire up the mower at about 10....which strikes me as too late...but maybe i'm out to lunch.

10 PM seems too late, I would agree. 9 PM seems reasonable for all days. For weekdays, I would say 7:30 AM. Weekends maybe 8:30 or 9:00 AM.

Fertilize 4 times a year limits the amount of weeds coming back. I fertilize every 8 weeks or so starting 2nd to 3rd week of April. I will be putting down my second application next week. Then another mid August and a winter formula in mid Octoberish.

I still also have a few bottles of weed n feed. Road trips/vacations are not just for fun anymore. I always check to see whereever I go if I can buy weed n feed. I only need the weed and feed for the portion of lawn that is attached to my neighbours because his lawn is awfully full of weeds and they do nothing about it., not even cut really.

7am - 11 pm is the acceptable time for noise, isn't it?

I'd hate it if my neighbours were running their mowers before 9 a.m. and after 9:30 p.m. No, I'm not in bed at those hours, but I would never run my mower outside of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. My mower is battery operated and it makes much less noise than a gas mower, but still....

Putting in a plug here for battery-operated mowers. Love mine.

So what if Alberta doesnt allow it, just order it online.

If Communist Alberta doesnt allow something like that, I have no problem with anyone who decides to make a personal decision to go against the Fatherland.

Also, I have no problem with 8 am to 10pm - no earlier or no later though.

9am on a weekend seems really to late.

I believe City of Calgary bylaws is midnight to 6am ?

I bought some of that Eco sense stuff - it was about $34 for a jug of it - it works pretty well

Anyone have any miracle cures for dew worms, google is full of half baked ideas. I'm pretty sure I'm screwed but I'm sick of the mine field that is my back yard.

My last place had them, and I was told the only thing that really works is to electrocute, rototill and relay sod.
