I doubt Harper is going to win. The polls are always misleading. Look at the last election, look at the last American election.
People don't like the liberals and that's what the polls show, but it doesn't show that they won't vote for them again. Visiting many eastern boards, the attitude is all the same. It's apathy or "evil you know better than the evil you don't" against the Conservatives.
But the cool thing is that if the Conservatives form a government, that'll be 2 Prime Ministers from Calgary! That's more than anywhere else outside Ontario and of course Quebec.

I know I'm just being picky, but wasn't Harper born in Ontario? I realize his riding is in Calgary.
But, I would definetely be happy to see Calgary gain another local PM.

When Harper first showed up as leader of the Reform Party a few years back, I remember him making the media rounds out East (I lived in Toronto then), and he definitely downplayed being from Calgary. He was constantly mentioning growing up a Toronto boy. He said "Leaside High School" so many times I wondered if he wanted to be the principal there instead of PM.

I have to disagree with you. Unless the people of Canada have totally lost their minds, Mr. Martin and the Liberals will be out of office for a while real soon. No government should EVER be allowed to abuse the taxpayers money or the democratic system as blatantly as the Liberals have and still be allowed to govern.

The Liberals are dead in Quebec, and certantly wont be picking up anything from the west.
They would have an extremely difficult time forming the next government if the election were held today.
Really, their only hope is to run another bigoted campaign like they did in 2000, and hope that Canadians are stupid enough to fall for it twice.
Also, if Martin cares at all for this country, he would call an election tomorrow. As of yesterday, Jack Layton became the Prime Minister, as he is the difference between an election in May, and an election whenever.
If Martin does what Layton tells him, the NDP supports his government.
Goodbye tax cuts.
Hello wasteful spending on worthless programs like national day care.
And given how spineless Martin is, he will bend, because Martin has never been about what's best for Canada. Merely what's best for his carreer.

Well my friend, I'd hate to break it to you, but the people of "Canada" (Read: Ontario) have lost their minds 12 years ago and has yet to rediscover their whereabouts, and it's not looking so bright in the near future either...

Out of curiosity, why is it best for Canada to call an election tomorrow?

Last Time I checked, the Liberals + NDP were 2 votes shy of a majority.

Two great policy reasons why I don't want a Conservative gov't....
But them I'm just a brainwashed idiot and actual policy reasons don't mean anything.

And Harper's desire to call an election ASAP has nothing to do with his personal career desire to become PM right?
Nobody makes the personal sacrafices necessary to climb the political ladder that high without a strong desire for the power.

I'm not disagreeing with you but I AM trusting they'll come to their senses when they take the time to think what this government has REALLY been doing with their money. If Ontario REALLY cares about keeping Canada together, they won't wave a red flag in front of the bull by voting a Liberal Party that is absolutely despised in Quebec back into office.
If Ontario votes the Liberals back into office they will be doing wonders for the Separatist movement in Quebec.
In real simple English: Canada will be doomed . . . DOOMED . . . DOOMED!!!

I'm not sure if Ontarians would give a rat's ass about Quebec separating as long as they get their daily dose of missing tax $$, national day care, Kyoto, gun registries, and same-sex marriages. I don't even want to imagine what this country will be like in 10 years.

I believe there have already been two P.M.s from Calgary. Joe Clark and R.B. Bennet. Bennet was P.M. at the beginning of the great depression and I believe lived in the Palliser Hotel. He was a lawyer born in New Brunswick. I don't think either were that cool.

Yeah, he was the founder. He originally joined James Lougheed as a partner but started the Bennett firm in 1922 which became Bennett Jones in 80.

You say that as if having Stephen Harper would be better than Jack Layton... to me it seems like we could either have our social agenda pushed back 50 years by Harper or have our economy pushed back by Layton... Why do you Liberal supporters resort to fiction when you criticize the Conservatives? How the heck is the social agenda going to be set back 50 years? Are things so bad over on the Liberal side that you have to invent scary stuff about the Conservatives?
Provincial NDP governments in BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario confirms how badly the economy has been managed by the NDP in the past. Where is the evidence that the Conservatives will hinder the social agenda and what constitutes setting back that agenda? Also, who's agenda are we talking about?

Uh, if you're talking about representation as opposed to where the PM was born, the riding of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan has been represented by three Prime Ministers: Wilfred Laurier, MacKenzie King, and Diefenbaker.

I always wonder about how that works. The example I gave above about Harper being from Toronto is one question, as is Martin's origin. He's known as "just another PM from Quebec", but as I understand it, he was born and raised in Windsor, ON.
I was born and lived 32 years in Toronto before moving to Calgary. If I was crafty enough to steal Rob Anders' cushy position, and then become PM, would I be hated by Calgarians for being from Toronto, or feared by Ontarians for being from Calgary?

Depends on what party you were with.
Conservative then you would be feared by Odisliked by Ontarioans.
Liberal, although can't se how you would win in Calgary, you would be disliked by Calgarians as a Liberal honk from TO.
