Default How do I open this barrel?

Anyone know how to open the top of this thing? I bought these barrels at the end of last summer with the intent of building rain barrels out of them, but I can't seem to figure out how to open them. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

What surferguy said...

Open a pair of channel locks / pliers and use it on the inside of the cap.

Thread Hijack...

How Do I...

Mount an RV step that has holes at 4.5" to an RV that has 12" separations. (width is correct so it's only the back of the stair I need to mess with) Can I buy a mounting bracket somewhere, do I need a welder?

OP: Seems like a good excuse to get a plasma cutter.

Thanks guys! I'll give it a shot.

Sounds like this is turning into a handyman's (or possibly un-handyman) thread...

Edit: well psh that was easy. This whole time I've been trying to just yank it out instead of unscrewing it. Thanks!

What you need is a bung wrench. Yup, that's a real thing.

Actually, you don't need one, you should be able to open it with a regular wrench, just stick one end next to the one part sticking up, lay the wrench across the bung so it cathches the other one, push down and turn, or get a pair of plyers, spread them out between the two parts sticking up, and turn.
If it's really on there, or rusted it can be pretty tough though, and then you really will need a bung wrench.

They are sealed, you can take the bungs out but to use them as rain rain barrels you'll need to cut the tops off.

I would suggest (although it is a bit late now as you already have the steel drums) plasitic barrels for rain drums, easier to cut, easier to clean, rust proof light weight (when empty) easier to drill out a tap at the bottem to occasionally empty etc. oh and the whole top comes off to get a watering can or bucket.

Yeah the small bungs (heheh) came out pretty easily with just some needle nosed pliers. I'll try this with the big ones next.

I wish I knew about this sooner though. During the winter-time, the cold weather was causing the barrels to bang around because of the pressure. I ended up punching some small holes on the side of the barrel just to get them to de-pressurize. Bah.

Just a quick thought...

What were they used for originally...

If it was some type of chemical you may not want to be diluting that stuff with rain water and putting it on your plants...

They were filled with that orange cleaner, which is apparently bio-degradable. But yeah I'll definitely have to wash out the barrels first.

The plastic ones are a biatch if they happen the peel back when trying to open them up. Metal = way easier.

Take the barrel down to the Calgary Zoo and have this fellow jump on it for you:

Wouldn't punching holes in the top left the barrels slightly more useable?
