The New York Times looks at Paris Hilton Inc . . . . and the end of civilization.
"Now I'm trying to build an empire. I don't want to be known as this Hilton hotel girl my whole life. I want to make my own name."
It appears that Ms. Hilton's blond ambition knows no bounds and she is clearly intent on capitalizing on her fame; she commands anywhere from $150,000 to $200,000 to appear at a party for 20 minutes, she said. "If it's in Japan I get more," she said.
Last year she began her perfume line, Paris Hilton, which is marketed through Parlux Fragrances. She is working with Parlux again for her makeup line, as well as for a men's fragrance, which will appear in stores next month. Ms. Hilton said - ahem, purred - that her cologne is "so hot that when guys wear it it makes girls want them."
In December, with Fred Khalilian, a Florida-based businessman who made his fortune in the fitness world, Ms. Hilton opened Club Paris in Orlando. She plans to open another outpost in Miami in August and another in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve. Mr. Khalilian splits the profits with Ms. Hilton and reportedly paid her seven figures to join forces.
"I wanted a business model that could work for at least five years, and Paris will definitely be around," he predicted. "Every day they say her 15 minutes is up, and every day you have to add another 15 minutes."
Her Amazon.com jewelry has done well, according to Jani Strand, a spokeswoman for the site. "It's been eight months since we launched her line and her pieces are still in the top 20 out of 100,000 items,"
Her Amazon.com jewelry has done well, according to Jani Strand, a spokeswoman for the site. "It's been eight months since we launched her line and her pieces are still in the top 20 out of 100,000 items," Ms. Strand said. Her jewelry line, like the other products Ms. Hilton peddles, is not high-end, more befitting Cosmo Girl than Vogue. A handbag line, a clothing line, an album (think Blondie meets Gwen Stefani, Ms. Hilton said), an energy drink and a chain of boutique hotels are also on the horizon. When asked what Hotel Paris will look like, Ms. Hilton's voice rose several octaves. "It will be pink and hot," she said, sounding very much like a shy first-grader.
Her brilliance knows no bounds.

didn't register, just read your excerpt.
honestly, people keep calling this crap, reality tv, etc. as more evidence of 'the slide'.
but take what's happening in the states - the grassroots level of bible-thumping has never been bigger.
i think that media exposure, internet, etc. is bigger than ever and the access level is higher in every direction, simultaneously.
just because paris hilton is HUGE now doesn't mean it's just because of the degradation of our society - singular access to media is at its greatest point ever, more people have easier private guilty pleasures that may include this crap.
evidence of 'the decline'?
no.
evidence of over-exposure and glossover and the train-wreck fascination people have with wanton trailer-trash sluttery?
oh-yeah.
edited for spelling

Well I have to disagree somewhat. I think it does say something about our culture and society when the biggest celebrities and idols we have are people who plays games for a living (sports), people who sing/dance and people who pretend to be other people (actors/actresses.)
What happened to people who making a positive impact on this world for others? What about the great minds and thinkers of our age, the great artists? What about people who are trying to help the world advance and progress?
These people are not promoted because it's not financially beneficial to promote them. Once again it comes down to capitalism and the bottom line. Our idols are manufactured and fed to us so that we'll buy more of them, so that we'll be distracted by them and not think about the base issues of life.
I dunno, it says something like that anyways...

She's creating a "brand" and doing a pretty good job of it too . . . . in a shallow kind of way.
She seems to know her market quite well.
Or maybe those who know her market and who can profit from her image are the smart people and she's at least smart enough to "hook up" with them.
I seriously wonder if she would have been able to create that "brand" without the x-rated videotape generating notoriety.
Some have even speculated that the second x-rated tape that came out last year was actually deliberate to keep her faltering "brand" from falling off the cliff.
It seems to have worked.
Notoriety generates fame and, as we can see, notoriety can sell.
I agree its not the end of civilization but maybe its a comment on civilization. Then again, this kind of schtick is also centuries old. Notoriety has always titilated.
Its all just rather amazing that she can rake in that kind of dough given there doesn't appear to be anything there other than air.

In her case, maybe. But why didn't it work in the case of this dufus?
I wonder when Jessica Simpson will be releasing her sex tape?

What is more disturbing is that Cowperson knew there was a second Paris Hilton Videotape and I did not. [/b][/quote]
There's a People Magazine in my house every week . . . . I can't help but know important things like that.
With dial-up in the country, I probably couldn't watch it anyway. It was hard enough on the weekend trying to download the Battlestar Galactica episode "33." It never did work.
I think I'll have to hijack my own thread and ask how the internet connection via StarChoice is for anyone else out there.

It just makes me laugh that people watch or buy crap from people like Paris or Jessica Simpson or other no talent losers like that. You have to admire her marketing skill, but the fact that these people still get press time, air time, Tv shows, etc tells me that alot of people have really low standards.

The only reason this chick is remotely famous is because she got Fataed on Camera as most of you know. Of course this considered a 'slide'.
Anyways this just goes to further my theory that some of her handlers (with her permission of course) decided to release the first tape in order to give her instant fame. She basically had all these stupid ideas just ready to fire off a press and of course weeks after the first tape that show "the simple life" begins to air.
I mean at least it took Monika a while to get all her ideas off the ground and I think she really only had the TV show and a lipstick thing. Hilton stretches far beyond that.
