Almost hard to believe they could be this effective in catching that many guys who were trying not to be found.

Among the 10,340 people captured between April 4 and April 10 are 162 accused or convicted of murder, 638 wanted for armed robbery, 553 wanted for rape or sexual assault, 154 gang members and 106 unregistered sex offenders.

The amount of police/marshall activity (hunting) I've witnessed in the course of each day has gone up dramatically in the last couple of weeks.

Not to make light of this, I can't help but recall the Simpsons episode where the police have the "free boat" offer sent to all deliquent traffic fine payers.

And they'll put these 10,000 felons where? It's not like the US prison system is suffering from vacancies. Looks like Bubba and Bobo get a couple new cellmates....

Either that or a whole lot of new parole officers will need to be hired....

There was a Pacino? movie in which they sent letters to a bunch of absconders to have breakfast with the New York Yankees. Then they arrested everyone who showed....except one guy who actually had his son and not himself as motivation and was let go.

Anyone remember what movie that was?

The 'free boat' thing reminded me of that.

Back in the day when the Broncos were wearing orange and getting killed in the Super Bowl the cops in several cities were pulling a similar stunt every year.

They'd send out a bunch of "you won a ticket to the greatest Super Bowl party ever" things to a area scofflaws and thieves, rent a big hall and wait for them to walk in.

Sure enough they'd get a few hundred gullible suckers showing up and with the cameras rolling the crooks would strut in with big smiles and holding their "winning tickets" only to find themselves in a room full of cops. They'd be cuffed and whisked out the back door so as not to raise the hackles of the people outside lining up to be arrested.

It always made me laugh.

A drive by post but the US prison system really is one that is tearing at the seams. Every 10 days they are building a new prison facility. Canada is moving the same way with the building of the superprisons in the east.

Thus I pose the question to the board is that due to the population committing more crimes, or is it due to the sentecing and the crim justice sytem becoming more punitive in nature.
