Hey, a random, kind of old debate on whether you support the seal hunt or not, as it exists in Canada today?
The reason why I ask is because I just watched an older interview on Larry King Live with Danny Williams (Premier of NFLD) and Paul and Heather McCartney (representing some animal rights group).
I think this issue raises many good questions both within/outside of Canada, and I would like the input of some people here.
Is it humane?
Is it acceptable?
To what extent do people outside of Canada have a right to interfere on our internal affairs? ( our culture, values, etc. )
I recommend watching the video's on youtube ( just type Danny Williams Larry King ). Danny Williams is entertaining in his own right.
I'm not pro seal hunt, but I don't think that I have any right to push those values on others; as long as the hunters adhere to basic practices and avoid cruelty, they've got a right to seek a market, and the national department of fisheries have a right to act in the interests of preserving the fish stocks.
But the european anti-seal campaign is just the height of hypocrisy, given the scale of their own fur farms. As far as I'm concerned, the cruelty of raising a wild animal in a small cage for its whole life is more cruel than sealing practices, and the number of animals raised and killed in the european fur farming industry dwarf the Canadian sealing numbers.

I am more concerned about fish populations with the ballooning seal population. Why does no one think of the fish?
That's really the greatest danger to marine ecology and world economies and that is the dwindling fish populations and overaggressive fishing. Large seal populations eat a ton of fish too.
Fish are down to something ridiculous like 10-15% of their 1900 populations in oceans.
The one thing I'm curious about is whether or not the whole "cuteness factor" plays into it. If the sealers were running around hitting something that looked like rock cod or something, would people be as concerned about it?

As for the seal hunt - Yes, I am for it. I don't think people realize anymore how messy life really is. If the seal hunt helps show them that that's how life still works, that's a good thing. People need to see that more often.
As for others "interfering" in our "internal affairs" - Yes, I think they have a right. Just like we have a right to discuss their affairs. It doesn't matter where anyone is from, it's everyone's right to have an opinion. And to voice it - if we believe in the principles of a free nation, it shouldn't have caveats such as nationality. Besides, they can only really interfere in this system if we let them. In other words if we think they are right.
I am against the commercial seal hunt - the only products produced are fur (for sad people to wear) and penises for Chinese medicine - both of which the world can do without. As much as I wish the whole world was vegan, I understand wholly that some communities would find it near impossible - therefore, I can accept the Inuit taking seals for food.
