So why not turn to CP for advice on a trip to Bali??? People here seem to know everything else.....

I'm heading over to Asia next month, and to mix things up I'm thinking about a little stop over somewhere in Indo. I've been surfing off and on the last 8 yrs, so why not head out to some of the best swell in the world to pummel myself with?

Has anyone else been there? Any recommendations? I'm bringing the g/f, so I'm hoping to hit somewhere that has something for her to do while I disappear into the ocean for 8hrs a day

I'll be picking up a lonely planet, but would prefer some first hand advice.

Yes - spent about 10 days of my month long tour of Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia about 10 years ago. Here are my Bali recommendations, though I can't surf so I can't tell you where to go for that.

- Kuta Beach is good for only a night or two of madcap drinking. Then we get the hell out of there. Went to Paddy's Bar both nights, which was blown to bits by arseholes a couple of years ago.
- For surfing, Lovina is a good bet. Weird grey sandy beaches but you can also swim with the dolphins.
- Ubud is the cultural capital and worth a visit. You'll get ample opportunity to see the freaky voodoo like fire dances here, and they are worth it. The monkey jungle had one of those little buggers trying to reach in my pocket - you can give it a pass.
- From Bali, we also jumped across to Lombok, which was a nice, relatively quiet island with nice beaches.

There was four of us, and we actually rented a jeep and drove around the island, which was good until the car got towed and we had to spend the morning in the office of the police station, waiting for the rental car guy to come and sign the papers away. They were nice enough to give us a tour of their prison. You won't want to go there.

As for the rest of Indonesia, if you get the chance, Ceylon and the south are great, as is Jojyakarta. Avoid Jakarta - it's even worse than Manila, which is not a great town to spend lots of time in.

Yeah, about the only thing I know about Bali is Kuta beach, and I'm not too keen on doing that seeing as I knew one of the guys that was in the bar at the time it was blown up.

A car rental sounds like a great idea. Are they expensive? How long does it take to get around the island? It's fairly small so I'm guessing hours and not days??

Cars weren't too expensive. And it's not huge, so end to end is a couple of hours (though lots of the cars you rent have no almost no gas, so be careful not to trek too far from the airport). If you're planning on spending your entire time in Bali it's a good recommendation.

As for Kuta, I would say it's safer than ever - nobody expected the bombing but now if you want to have a couple of days just drinking and relaxing, it's not a bad place to be.
