I lived there for 5 years (2002-2007) and basically if you don't hang out with gangs, stay away from bad neigbourhoods (stay away from the North, it sucks and that is where a lot of the bad stuff happens), you should be fine. Also around Commonwealth, try not to walk outside late at night. I was never a huge fan of that area. University area is actually a pretty cool area to go to Pubs/Restaurants. But yeah, avoid the north......bad crowd in general.

I immediately disregarded Oilfans comment about the north. Generally anyone who makes such a broad generalization about North side Edmonton has never spent any significant time here. I've walked around all these supposed bad neighborhoods at night and I've never had a problem. Is commonwealth the nicest part of town? No, but it's fine. It's central, close to anything, and not dangerous. If you're out looking for drugs or hookers or whatever, then sure, you'll have a problem.

Where should I be looking if not on the north side, then? No wonder I never have any luck.

If you're not already committed, I do recommend living elsewhere than commonwealth. The area is ok, but is quite seedy.

I never said every single time that someone goes to the north, something will happen. But more crimes happen in North Edmonton then other areas. Is it the general public? No. It is gangs and other bad people. During the day it isn't bad which is why I said try not to be in that area late at night because there is a higher chance of something not good happening compared to other areas. And by the way, I went there over 50 times. Nothing ever happened to myself but there were a few occasions where I saw a shooting or stabbing so didn't go back to that area. Not to mention most of my friends have had similar experiences.

Living on a student's budget, I don't have much choice it I want to live remotely close to anything.
I'm pretty out the way (I'm a good distance from St. Joseph's and the horrid high density housing near it and the area is next to dead...seriously saw nobody but residents at the complex who are quite nice and a stray cat while scoping the place. I know parts of it are seedy...there was a sign that told you to report prostitutes!) so that should help.

Traitor!!! Your name shall be struck from the roll of Flames Fans and your family will be shunned. May the hockey gods have mercy on your soul, because we won't. You are dead to us.
PS: Dallas Pizza south of the river near Capilano Mall has great pizza and is the only bright spot in that dank corner of the world that is Edmonton.

The seediest parts of town are the most fun! If you want to experience a city, you gotta go where the city lives. Just don't get a ground level apartment.
