Gift ideas for a 60 year old
My parents are going to a friend's 60th birthday party night and they need a few ideas for a gift. They have a backup plan of a nice bottle of port, but I've been trying to think of some other things they could get, with little success.
A few ideas I had were:
- Music from 1950 (Fats Domino or Hank Williams maybe)
- A book with a timeline of 1950.
- A 60 year old bottle of spirits
I can't really think of anything else right now. I see that the first Peanut's comic strip is from 1950 and the Wings won the cup and the Yankees won the World series.
Does anybody have any clever or unique suggestions?

If the friend is a man, go with the liquor,
unless they have some sort of hobby like fishing etc, in which case, the stores abound with tackle and fishing books.
If the friend is a woman, a book by their favorite author (if that is known), CD of their favorite musical artist with a nice bottle of wine, tickets to the Philharmonic, dinner thearter, or something similar, if they are into that type of scene...
Forget that old music idea of yours, I supsect your parents' friend would enjoy listening to it as much as you would.
and most of those time line books are from USA and not too much is relevant for Canadians.

A 60 year old bottle of whatever is a good idea.
Its really tough with the music thing, what if this person doesn't like that kind of music.
If they're a sports fan, try to find a significant sporting event from that year, and try to find some piece of memorabilia.
Since the person was born in 1950 look up historical events and go from there.

Are you sure this person wants to be bombarded with reminders that they're 60? Why not something that anyone would enjoy? Like adult diapers?

On my 30th birthday my friends held a funeral and a wake for me where I had to lay in a casket being plied with Liquor while my friend eulogized me and told every one that I was a jerk, a ####### and a bad person when I was alive (Under 30)

A gift certificate to Caesar's Steak House.
Old people like eating out, but have a tendency not to splurge on things like this.

Are you looking for a sort of gag gift to help remind the friend he's turning 60?

It could be, but doesn't have to be. It could be a fun gift or a "serious" gift.
I'm not totally sure if he is a golfer or not.

My dad is 60 and he really likes it when I buy him box sets of old movies, like Clint Eastwood tough guy flicks or James Bond movies. You can get box sets at SAMS or Costco if you're in Canada for cheap. Also, if he likes Whiskey, a bottle of crown with some glasses (gift box) is a nice idea. I get those every Christmas for uncles and friends who are over 50. They keep the glasses and have the bottle, and Crown Royal always makes really nice gift boxes around the holidays.
This year for Christmas, I am giving my dad a Phiten bracelet, which is just a titanium bracelet you can get at any sports store that he can wear while he's golfing, it's supposed to help with aches and pains. You can buy them for about $20-$35 USD and my son wears the necklace one when he plays football and basketball.
Also- a good idea would be to get him a box of 1950 coins (since obviously he was born in that year) that would be a good keepsake. You can get them at any bank for about $40.
Have a good time!
