Toronto Most Miserable City In Canada
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/yahoocana..._canada__study
A study conducted by the Canadian Centre for the Study of Living Standards has concluded what many Canadians have long believed: That Toronto is the most miserable city in the country.
Despite having the country's largest GDP and population, the megacity ranks lowest on the happiness scale. The study used data from the Canadian Community Health Survey for 2007 and 2008 to determine the happiness of various regions of Canada and the factors which contribute to the variation.
Calgary 6th happiest:

Interesting that wikipedia is now a acceptable reference for a news article.

I live here and I like it. I'll go out on a limb and state that another likely reason for unhappiness here is the large immigrant population. A lot of people coming to Canada with unrealistic views on what life will be like once they arrive here, and in turn becoming dissatisfied.
That, and the Leafs sucking.

Sitting in traffic for four hours a day probably does not help matters.

I read this the other day. It also states that the difference between the top cities and the lowest cities is actually relatively small and that there is a general correlation between city size and happiness. Being a massive city, it stands to reason that it would be lower.

Lived there for four years and I can't say I disagree. Did not enjoy my time there. Having said that I am from the west, and I think that a divide exists.
Eastern Canadians out West usually talk about how much they prefer it out that way.
Similar to being in Edmonton, there is a feeling it is not "home". Just my own personal story.

As a westerner when i lived out that way I never felt like I fit in.
It never felt like home.
When you ask somebody from southern Ont for help you can tell there is a "what is in it for me" attitude, but in the west I always felt there was a genuine desire just to help.

Does anyone else find it ironic that 3 of the top 5 happiest cities are in Quebec where we constantly hear about how terrible their lives are and how better it would be if they could just seperate.

I freaking loved my time in Toronto. So much to do and see. I don't think there's hope for one to be happy anywhere if they can become disillusioned with a place like TO.

Yep, it's pretty fun here, and it'd probably be even better if you were just visiting and looking to enjoy the city. If you go to any new city with preconceived ideas about how it will be you won't enjoy your time there. Toronto's a great place to let loose and just become a city-folk. Make friends with random strangers, that type of thing. It's also one of the best places in the world for being able to meet and socialize with people from a myriad of different backgrounds and ethnicities. I love it here.

I loved the 5 years I lived in Toronto. I am happier to be back home in Halifax but my time in Toronto will always be remembered fondly.

Colour me surprised that Saint John scored as well as it did. All you ever hear from anyone around here is that it's a terrible city to live in, nothing to do, etc. Nice to see that we really didn't rank that far below Halifax, and above all other NB cities. Take that, Moncton!

Considering how much time and effort people spend on this board detailing every little driving misfortune (there was even an offshoot thread created as the original gear-grinding thread was apparently not enough), I'm inclined to think that Calgarians aren't much happier in this regard either.

I've been in the ad/promotions business (and has never lived in Regina or in Saskatchewan nor has ever wanted to), I think that was a pretty good campaign.

My wife and I were just lamenting about being in London & Paris this time last year and how Toronto has next to no character. there is no 'old town, Euro charm' like in Montreal or Quebec City; and Victoria and Calgary (where she and I are from respectively) have Mother Nature right at the doorstep. London & Paris both have "Christmas Markets" and lit up streets at this time of year. Calgary could conceivably do the same along the Stephen Ave. Mall. All Toronto has is Yonge St (nasty, though not quite as scummy as in the '70's) where the news item of the day yesterday was a Ryerson University librarian taking pictures of the Zanzibar strippers on their smoke break on the roof - Toronto, a class act all the way.

It is all lit up at night now with these animated icicle lights. Looks pretty nifty in my opinion.
