Self-Checkouts Disappearing?
I really enjoy using self checkouts at stores because I shop at weird hours where there's only like 1 cashier working the shift but a ton of people in line.
Unfortunately, I find self-checkouts are disappearing. Most of the Wal-Marts I've been to have removed them and one or two grocery stores as well. Why is this happening?

I don't think enough people are using them. Quite often I see lineups where there's a cashier with the self ones mostly empty. Maybe people don't like change.

They only work half the time is the problem.
For me, they're only worth it if there are reasonably long lines.

What Wal-Mart has done with their 10 items or less line is the stupidest thing any retailer has ever done.
They removed the self checkout to add the 10 items or less cashiers.
Who thought that having 5 of your cashiers running a 10 items or less line was smart? especially when they only have 3 or 4 other cashiers running the bigger lines. Maybe it's just the Marlborough one but it's just stupid.
Now when I go to Wal-mart I try to keep my items under 10 items or else I'll be waiting in line for an hour. Dumb business move and I can imagine other people doing the same thing.

I love them at Sobeys but everywhere else it always seems like a pain.
Not sure why, but maybe it is because I am normally only picking up one or 2 things at Sobeys

Self checkouts take people's jobs. I hate them and wish for them all to go away.

It's a pain when after scanning an item, you must place it on the shelf beside the scanner. What if I brought my own bags? I guess the trick is to scan the item, place the item in your bag, then put it on the shelf. Would be just much easier if I scan all my items, then put them all on a convenient shelf to bag them.

They're not that great for the stores, honestly. You have tons of people who don't really know what they're doing, asking for help for every item they can't easily scan. The people have to constantly reset the tare on the scale because it's just slightly off, and the scale is the only way they know for sure you're not defrauding them. Coupons can be a pain in the ass to deal with. Then there's the people who are just really slow at putting stuff in their bag, and in the end it's more efficient to have more express lines.

You put your bag on the shelf and then your items into your bag. Unless you have a heavy bag that will tip the scale.

I freaking LOVE self-checkouts. I can get in and out of Safeway and Coop so quickly with these. At Safeway, there's one line for four checkouts - so while the line may look long, it moves very quickly. Makes me laugh when people see the long line, look disgusted and go to a full-serve line and end up waiting three times as long.

One thing I hate about the checkouts is how people bring like 20 item's to scan.

I hate those damn things. I will never use one.
It's already enough work to drag my anus all over these massive stores to get junk, and then they want you to do all the work at the cash register?
Screw that!

So you'd rather wait in line for a extra 15 minutes?

I'd rather they hire enough cashiers.
