Cupcake Craze - Your Thoughts
Very Random thread here. When I drove down to Calgary I noticed a lot of cupcake shops. Crave, Buttercream, Bliss, etc. I have noticed quite a few in Vancouver and Edmonton as well the past 4-5 years.
Does anybody here notice it? Do you ever buy them? I find myself usually trying them out if I see a new spot. They can be expensive, but also a good dessert.
I've also seen a few shows pop up on TV the past few weeks (Some DC Cupcake Show and some Vancouver Original Cupcake show).
Anyways, pointless thread, but just wanted to know if others notice a growing trend here.

Crave cupcakes are good. Super sweet. Super expensive. Super tasty.

The dark angel at Crave is ridiculous. Chocolate sponge with cream cheese icing. My god man!

I had cupcakes at my wedding instead of a cake. It was the first time I had ever seen it done. Now it seems as if all the weddings I go to have cupcakes.
I really like Crave and then I believe there was a cupcake kiosk in Cross Iron mills. It was pretty good as well.

Thanks for starting the trend! Did you also start the idea of having an Open Bar? If so, thanks even more!

Cupcakes are just terrible - they are SO sweet. Far too much icing. They make my teeth ache just to look at them.

Well I had my wedding in Calgary .... the weddings I have seen them at now are in Oklahoma. Maybe it was a trend already in Calgary, I was just saying it was the first time I had ever seen cupcakes at a wedding.

Screw cupcakes, I'm having mini-cakes at my wedding. Mini-cakes with midget strippers jumping out of them.

Same here, I have not had one that I can finish. They are always way to sweet and I just feel ill after. I make much better ones.

In my opinion, it's a medium-term (5-10 year) fad and can't end soon enough.
The fuss over a "Premium Cupcake" is pretty stupid. They're targeted at the same people willing to pay $6.00 for a cup of coffee.
Wake up people....in what kind of world are cupcakes and coffee considered luxuries or delicacies?

Yeah, I think it might be on the downswing, at least it seems that way out in NYC which is where the whole craze seemed to start (apparently due to the frequent appearance of Magnolia cupcakes on Sex and the City). There are still lots of cupcake places here, ranging from regular stores to cupcake trucks and little stands that only sell bite size cupcakes, but it doesn't seem like people are as into the whole thing as they were a year or two ago.
Now if only I can figure out what the next craze will be so I can cash in on it.

Would I pay that much for a cupcake? No.
Would I enjoy one when people buy them for me? Hell Yes.
I personally like Bliss cupcakes better, not as sweet.

I think their a nice indulgence 2-3 times a year. Yeah if your eating $4 cup cakes and drinking $5 coffees every day you've gotten a problem. But once in a while, indulging on an overpriced sugar rush is grand.

Cupcake just taste like...cake. I do enjoy them (because I like cake), but I don't know why they're so special. The only reason I go for a cupcake and not a piece of cake is because I don't really like all the cream that cake has. A cupcake just has the cakey goodness.
I think Crave is way overrated. I mean, it still tastes good, but it doesn't taste any different than cupcakes you get at a grocery store.

For $2.95 they are not a bad indulgence! Anyone have the ticker tape on the calorie count etc....Things are very filling regardless and you only ever need one and it will keep you from having your cake and eating it all too....They must throw a lot away as they are always fresh and never have hard/crusty icing all the times I have had one...Crave is my Cupcake dealer when I need a sugar hit
N/M : 1 Crave is 530 Calories
