Apocalypse: The Second World War
so i just finished watching this series that i recorded on Thursday from National Geographic, and it's an incredible show. no other WWII program i've seen covers the events so well right from the buildup of the Nazi party to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. but now i'm getting a little pissed off as i know this would make the perfect Christmas gift for a few war buffs i know, yet i can't find it available anywhere on DVD or Blu-Ray. does anyone know anywhere you can buy this set, or if it even exists? the National Geographic site is pretty much useless, and i can't find it on Amazon or other online stores

It's a great series, particularly visually, but the best is probably the 26 episodes of The World At War, commissioned in 1969 and aired on BBC in 1973.
The latter has a great many first person, eyewitness interviews - with Hitler's secretary as an example - that greatly fill out the commentary and visuals.

But I liked this newest one a lot too as it's primarily colorized and looks good in hi-def on a big screen.

I recorded this last year on National Geographic and it is very, very good. I don't watch much TV, so I have been slowly working my way through the episodes on my PVR. Definitely worth watching - and I'm not even a war buff per se, but admittedly a history buff. Not that you can have one without the other, of course.

I purchased the set after I first saw this when it first started showing on T.V.
God knows if I ever have kids I'll make them watch this, it really does illustrate that WWII earned the name the great hate.
At the end of the day War is evil and consumes the best and brightest, but it is one of the evils that is occasionally justified.

Did it have alot about the Eastern Front? I find that part of the Second World War the most brutal and the most neglected.

Yeah, there is a lot of coverage on that side of the war. Also a lot on the Pacific battles and even the North African stuff. They really go out of their way to illustrate how the entire world is encompassed in the war.
I think that's the thing I enjoyed about this series the most - the fact that it offered up so much new information and perspective, at least for me. I'm by no means a "war buff", but I found myself staying up until the wee hours of the morning last week glued to this series!

For 6 hours of history, its incredibly dense. Right down to the meeting of allied and Russian Troops in Germany at a photo event setup by the Russians. It focused on a huge picture of Stalin sitting right next to a tiny black ribbon marked picture of Roosevelt.
A ton of amazing video of Hitler throughout the war including meeting his sycophants at the eagles nest.
