Pacific Ocean (CBS 8)- A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught on video Monday evening by a KCBS news helicopter.
The spectacular contrail could easily be seen up in Los Angeles, but who launched this missile and why, remain a mystery for now.
The magnificent images were captured from the KCBS chopper around 5pm. The location of the missile was described as west of Los Angeles, north of Catalina Island, and approximately 35 miles out to sea.
A Navy spokesperson tells News 8, this wasn't its missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in that part of the region.
On Friday, November 5, Vandenberg Air Force Base launched a Delta II rocket, carrying the Thales Alenia Space-Italia COSMO SkyMed satellite, but a sergeant at the base tells News 8, there have been no launches since then.
News 8 showed the video to Robert Ellsworth, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO and a former Deputy Secretary of Defense.
He said it didn't appear to be a Tomahawk missile and said it would be safest to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.
Based on pure speculation, however, Ambassador Ellsworth said, with President Obama in Asia, perhaps this could have been a show of our military muscle.
"It could be a test firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from an underwater submarine, to demonstrate mainly to Asia, that we can do that," he said, stressing that it was just a theory.
The FAA report no radar activity in that area at the time it was spotted. If it were a plane causing an illusion, you would think they would have been able to pinpoint it fairly easily.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Sure looks like a plane contrail, with the plane heading towards and to the right of the camera.
Missile launches won't have a spread out exhaust base like that, unless the missile was extremely slow.
The main thing that casts doubt on it being a plane is the FAA stating there was nothing reported on radar at that time in that area. That, and the contrail is obviously much bigger than usual for a plane, but that could be contributed to wind and whatnot, and the constant glare and size of the object in the video, which, possibly, you could also contribute to the sun.
It's a lot of ifs and maybes, though. The main thing is the radar report, IMO. Also, I am not sure how a missile launch from an underwater submarine would affect the exhaust base. Would it be similar? They are saying it wasn't on land.

Looks way too slow for a missile, and it's going the wrong way to be something to go into orbit, you launch things towards the east to put things into space.
Looks like an airplane, the bright bit looks just like sunlight reflecting off the plane.
EDIT: Though it could be headed towards the camera too, hard to tell. The contrail would be might brighter for a rocket too.
Thats gotta be a sub launched ICBM... trigger happy gunnery sargeant or classified naval exercises. Something along those lines. Thing looks like the classic trident launches
