Multiple Kansas towns destroyed by tornados tonight
I'm watching the weather late tonight and making sure we won't get anything too nasty here...which appears to be the case.
But, sadly, 5 Kansas towns have been hit...and according to reports virtually destroyed by various tornados.
The small towns of Macksville, St. John, Claflin and Ellinwood have all been hit.
The town of Greensburg, which is a bit larger has been largely destroyed according to first hand reports.
Just saw a picture on tv of that tornado backlit by lightning and it was unfreakingbelievable. Just gigantic.
I'll try to post some links tomorrow as more and more pictures come in. I know some of you are very interested in severe weather.
Worst night in several years that I can recall here in Kansas. So far, no fatalities. I hope that holds up.
Updated info says no serious damage in the town of Ellinwood, but they are in the path of a third tornado inside an hour.

I can't even keep up with the number of towns hit with a tornado tonight. At least 2 more past the five I listed. Tornado(s) still on the ground. This all started 6 hours ago.
Still no confirmed fatalities, but I'd be very surprised if that holds up.

Dis, I would think you're considering relocation about now? Might be time to make the trek back to Montana, where it's safe. Do you think the size and ferocity of the storms might finally convince some of the "God fearin' folk" in Kansas that global warming exists, or is the big guy just punishing them for their sin of electing George W. Bush, twice???
Stay safe buddy.

Stay safe Dis....Im watching the news this AM and its mind numbing to see the size of the areas affected. The one they are focusing on right now is in Greensburg and the place is basically a pile of metal and wood.
That must of been one mother of a twister in size to affect that large of a chunk of earth.

Right through the middle basically.
It started in what you might call the NE corner of the SW corner of the state...if that makes sense. Damage ends in the north central part of the state.
Greensburg is about 150 miles due west of Wichita. Claflin is about 80 miles NW of Wichita.
Much of this area is already under another tornado watch until 10 tonight. Supposed to be like this through Monday too.
The entire town of Greensburg is being evacuated. Just unblievable. Not a large city by any means, but this isn't some tiny little one light town either. Over 2000 people, not quite sure of the exact number. I've been around fo rkiller tornadoes before...but I can't remember a town of this size with this much damage. Unreal.
Lanny, nothing to do with global warming....but yeah just one more reason for me to take my happy ass back home to the Flathead.

Come on up Dis, we had snow yesterday. Not freaking tornados.
I'll take a blizzard anyday over that.
Link to a video of a twister in Kansas yesterday

Yeah, there's a real uneasy feeling in the air. It's odd how you can feel when this stuff is ripe.
Still, where I live we are outside of that red and purple areas on your map. Hopefully we stay that way.
I have to go cut the rest of my lawn before the downpours start though!

I don't know why, but I got a chuckle from that. The Apocolypse could be impending, and you're worried about finishing your lawn!
It must be a tough breed that lives in Kansas. Call me lazy, but I would be using this as an excuse to wait to do the yard work.
Good luck to you down there.

Thanks.
My wife has been bugging me for 4 hours, so if I don't get it done beofre the weather gets here (and we'll get some even if it's not horrific) it's my ass!

Tornado on the ground just NW of Greensburg right now.
Were talking within 6 or 7 miles of where the one last night hit.
