Canada/USA postal return mail question...

Am I able to write "Return to Sender" on a parcel and toss in the mailbox? (and it will be returned) The item is from the States.

The item was mistakenly shipped to me, and I'd like to return it.

That's fine, write incorrect address or something else in bold so it gets noticed. I've done it before. Don't know if it ever made it back all the time though, although I've received Christmas cards back from the states after people have moved.

I knew letters worked, but I just wasn't sure if it works for parcels or not...

Is there a chance that the actual recipient lives nearby? I had a package delivered to my house once. Before returning it to sender, I searched for the person's name and found that they lived around the block and that one number in her address wrong. I called her, said I had a package for her, and she was around to pick it up in a few minutes. Geez that sounds like the introduction to a porno.

Even though it isn't really your job to do that, I was surprised how easy it was in this case.
