I thought he was one of the better Conservative MPs, but that's probably why better opportunities came along for him. Now if only someone would offer Rob Anders a real job...

Very interesting to see who the Tories get to run here. The riding contains some of the most liberal areas in the city (two provincial Liberal ridings, and some of the more liberal aldermen in Farrell and MacLeod (formerly Hawksworth)). Prentice was a good fit because he was a very moderate conservative, but if they don't field a good candidate and one of the liberals or NDP can figure out a great candidate to run here, there might be an upset. If Hawksworth hadn't run such a horrible mayoral campaign that pretty-much submarined his reputation, he would have been a good candidate for one of the other parties to put forward.

Um, yeah.
I would guess that would b a 7 figure position with a looooot of perks, and next to no public scrutiny.

I think nationally there probably would be pressure to not have consecutive party leaders from Calgary (it's unfortunate that where someone comes from is a factor in these decisions, but it is). So realistically he wasn't going to get a shot at being Prime Minister anytime soon.

did you hear Bob Rae ranting about this?
Damn I hate the NDP. Everything about them. (and yes, Rae is currently a Lib, but we all know his history)

Ugh... Prentice is the only Conservative MP that I respect. With his departure, the party is likely doomed to another leader drawn from Reform ranks.
The fact that he made a commitment to stay in office for no more then 8-10 years makes him even more deserving of public office in my view.

^I came here to post the same thing. Pretty crazy! I actually would bet Higgins wins that race though.

That would be seriously awesome!
I guess Hawkesworth lives in the riding...maybe he'll enter as well.

Some are speculating he wants to separate himself from politics and the current Conservative bunch prior to taking another run for leadership of the CPC.

He may have been born in Ontario (like Harper), but has lived in Calgary for quite a while and represents a Calgary riding, so he'd be seen as a Calgarian.

Awesome. I live in the riding and would love the opportunity to not vote for either of them twice in less than 6 months.
