A 17-year-old youth is dead after being shot by an Edmonton police officer near Rexall Place early Saturday morning. . . .Clifton Purvis, the executive director of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), said the suspect came at police armed with a knife and a baseball bat.
One officer fired three shots, wounding the 17-year-old suspect. The teen was taken to hospital where he died during emergency surgery. His name hasn't been released.
Definitely sad. But as usual this sort of thread will take on two sides. Here's mine. If you don't approach the cops armed, you will not get shot. He had with him a knife and a baseball bat. The cop did what he had to. When will people learn to not approach the cops armed?

As far as I know they're also trained to shoot for the torso as it's the biggest target. Using your fire-arm is considered 'lethal force'. I don't think they had much choice.

Given the circumstances, which don't seem to be in dispute, the cop didn't have any choice. My guess is the kid was drugged up or it was suicide by cop.

It can be argued that they could've shot him in the leg or something but these guys are trained to shoot and this kid deserved to get shot.
Hard shoes to be in for the cop.
They show a video at the RCMP school of a guy charging the police with a knife, a cop shot the guy 3 times in the legs and he still got far enough to stab him. unfortunately they have to shoot to kill.

Sorry Bouw it can't be argued, the torso is the thickest part of the body, and therefore a more likely hit. Aiming for the arms and legs might look cool in Hollywood, but pistols aren't exactly the most accurate thing in the world.
In fact some police departments are training their officers to double tap the suspect without hesitation.

Oh, I'm not arguing it.. But I forsee people using that as an argument in this case. I work with a former LAPD officer and he told me they are trained for two in the chest automatically.
So they didn't have a tazer on hand?...these types of incidents are perfect for tazer use. Oh yeah I forgot, the police can't help but go overboard and use them on everybody.

While I agree there has been a lot of recorded abuse from the police, this guy here was pretty stupid. Attacking an armed policeman with a knife and a bat?! He's 17 and he probably watched enough "Cops" to see exactly what will happen when armed men in chicken stained wife beaters attack police.

No, you're 100% wrong. Tasers are NOT for stopping an armed charging attacker. What happens when you fire a tazer and one of the wires hits his kinfe and is ineffective? You get stabbed
If said dude was swinging just his fist trying to hit the cops, sure, then tasers are more than appropriate. Knives are a different story

I think this is a the standard if a person charges at a cop with a weapon they have forfeited their life. Now if the cop ends up not killing we should be surprised. Not the other way around.
The cop in this case did his job unlike the other case on this board. If a cop draws his gun it should be with the intent of being willing to kill someone. Nothing wrong here.
I hope the officer gets anyhelp he needs to move on with his career as despite this being justified I suspect it is hard to kill someone.
Also with tasers, I've seen on cops a couple times if they guy is really drugged up the taser barely has an effect. This was definitely not a situation where I taser could be used.
