Couple guys just came by my house asking if I wanted to have my carpets cleaned for free because my neighbours, who placed the service order, couldn't have it done because their kid broke his arm. They gave some names of the neighbours but I have no idea who they are.
I've heard about this in the past with cement work. What's the scam again?

I would imagine they would
a) Steal stuff
b) Do the job and then tell you to pay for extra stuff, threatening to call the police or something if you don't pay
c) A and B
so many cynics out there, I got a free carpet cleaning from them. Just waiting for all my furniture to be returned from their shop for cleaning too. should be any day now... not even sure what they would do to clean my TV that they couldnt do at my home

You sure it was actually a tv and not an oven door in a sharp box?
Sure you invite them into your house, and the next thing you know they've eaten out of your garbage, pooped in the corner and your cats pregnant with some freaky half sub human half cat, I've seen it a million times.
Whatdaya mean we're not talking about Oiler fans.

Um... maybe they are just nice people who have kind hearts and good intentions and you just shut them down big time by rejecting their kindness. haha
OR:
When you say "yes" they starting cleaning your carpets and then charge you hidden fees for scotch guard, and the first 3 rooms are free, blah blah blah etc.
They were scheduled to clean your neighbours' carpets, but the neighbour kid broke his arm, so they had to cancel, and now the cleaning guys are bored so they've decided to clean your carpets for free instead of going to the strippers?
Or, the neighbours have already paid for the cleaning and, instead of rescheduling basically forfeited the payment, and so these guys - out of a sense of guilt - feel they owe somebody a cleaning, so they're going door to door giving your neighbours' cleaning away?
I'm just trying to get their logic here. Are they Mormons or something?

Back in in my high school days, some friends and I were high on weed and some guy came to the door and offered to clean the carpets. We let him come in and got a free carpet cleaning. As far as I know, there was no scam or anything. It was a pretty mind blowing thing to happen though when you're stoned.

They're going to break your kid's arm, then go on to the next house using your name as a reference.

There's a similar scam with fake door-to-door home alarm salesmen who target homes with no security signs or stickers on windows. They'll even wear outfits of some fake but legit looking company. There was a ring of it going on in the deep south in newer suburbs just recently. They'll do similar tactics like your neighbor canceled or they have time to do your house as well. The end result is that if the home owner admits that they don't have a home alarm and appears to have decent valuables, they'll come back at a later date when you're not home to do a Break and Enter. If you are sharp enough to buy a home alarm from them they'll keep your deposit then also rob you later. Beware.
You should have beaten the crap out of them on the spot. Think about it. If they ended up scamming you and you somehow lost out on property/money/whatever, you would have wished you did something about it earlier. That was your chance.
