I just went on a tour of their agency in Calgary and would probably kill to work there.
Anybody on CP work there, know anybody who does or have any experience with them?

I am going to guess that you took the tour with the University of Calgary today.
I was unable to go, how was the tour? Learn anything of use?

You bet. I'm in my last year of marketing so this would basically be a dream job. Think of everything google does for their employees and apply that to a marketing agency.

I am also in my final year of Marketing of the UofC, so I probably have met you before.
Now I am disappointed I was unable to make the trip, although working for somebody like Critical Mass is at best a couple years down the road because just looking at previous job openings with them they usually want 2-3 years experience for their entry level or even intern jobs.

I bet we've even been in some of the same classes. I'll take it to PMs, but we should have a coffee at Brew & Blendz sometime.
And yeah, you could go get some experience and then try to get in. But from the sounds of it they do hire new grads for the internship positions, although you have to be really really really persistent. They had some people there from the UofC who had gone that route (actually I recognized one of the girls from a few of my classes).

I know 3 friends that have worked there at one point or another. They all said it's a great place to work, but felt compared to the industry, they were quite underpaid.

I look down on Critical Mass from my place at arriVa, and it sure looks like some of those people work insane hours based on cars parked in their lot till all hours of the night.

Is it in your condo agreement that you must spell it "arriVa"?
Do you have to say it " arri... VA!"

Yes, yes it is. I also can't stand when people call it 'The arriVa'. There is no 'the' in front, it is just arriVa. Much like Chocolate, Colours, Sasso, Vetro, Nuera, and Keynote to name a few.

If you ever want a job there, don't call them a marketing agency.

I've also heard they underpay and overwork staff. Then again, there aren't a lot of options in that field in Calgary.

I too have heard it can be a brutal field to work in. My sister worked at Rare Method on 4th street for 3 years, she couldn't wait to leave.
Overworked and underpaid, she decided to do some upgrading to hope for an advancement. Well it worked, her superiors were so impressed with her upgrading that they fired her boss and moved her into his position, but at less pay than the original boss was making.
That was when she decided it was time to leave.

Yeah long hours and crap pay pretty much sums up that industry. It's amazing to me what people will put up with to work in a funky looking office.

It's a great industry to work as a freelancer in though - if you're good
I've thought about applying to places like CM but I've heard too many stories about how awful it is to work there. Not sure I believe them all, but it's enough to keep me working for myself.

I'm going to assume it's the same in Calgary in this field, but here in NY, the cooler and higher profile the place you work, the less they pay you and the harder they work you. Everyone knows that if you don't want to be here, there's a ton of younger guys waiting around the block tp get in (not unlike our thread starter).

Sounds like the aviation industry (at least for pilots). You won't do the job for that pay or in those conditions? Fine, there are 100 pilots right behind you ready to take your job.

Very true. I'm freelancing for a big ad agency at the moment, and I'm almost ashamed at how much they are paying me for the work. It's funny how anal places can be about salaried employees, yet throw money left and right for freelancers.
