i don't live in Airdrie, but from visiting a friend that does that idea seems incredibly short sighted. with the growth that Airdrie is going through right now, if no new projects were approved until existing ones finished then that town would be in a world of hurt in a few years

Will it be incumbent Linda Bruce for mayor?
She seems to have done a fine job, and has done some extensive campaigning. However, her election platform includes a forecasted 4-6% tax increase.

How about Edward Skelding?
"Get off my lawn you damn kids!!" - Plans to set up a curfew for the young folk.
Plans to freeze the tax rate. Plans to use military experience to whip city hall into shape.
Lastly, what about Peter Brown?
I have no idea what he stands for. Something about charities or something.
Can we get a poll?

This is such foolish politicking. So the people in Airdrie have agreed to no new civic services?

Are you really called Airdronian's? Sounds like an alien race. If I were from Airdrie I would introduce myself as Xarklax of the Airdronian's!

My money is on Peter Brown, Ross Mann is a nut and has zero background in the community other than living here to even be thought of in this race, if he gets a few votes it's because people read the words Tax Cuts on his sign.

Why get new services when you can just exploit Calgary's.

I'm for Brown. A genuine supporter of Airdrie and it's residents with a strong sense of what community means.
I've had the oppertunity to speak to all three canidates for at least a half hour and he was by far the most personalable, intelligent and sincere person. No question and everyone I've spoken to that has done the same said the exact same thing. "He talked with me, not at me."
Can't wait for the change.

Which candidate wants to work closer with Calgary to shoulder the costs that the City of Calgary incurs due to Airdronians' use of it's infrastructure?

Calgary will continue to support Airdrie and they will have to learn to like it. Airdronians may be leeches, but we are leeches that help Calgary recieve lots of funding from the Provincial and Federal levels.
You people in the south will just have to suck it.
As a matter of fact, this was more a thread meant to mock the Calgary civic election, but looking into the candidates, I think Brown might be an excellent candidate. Although, I am not sure how effective he is at selling his message.

I would guess that Airdrie leaches off Calgary taxpayers less than new developments within the city limits. Sure they might work in Calgary and use our roads to commute but there's business taxes that could cover that. At least they're not getting new fire halls, police stations, LRT stations, interchanges, and water and sewer infracture at the expense of established Calgary communities.

Looking strictly at commuters, it's apparently pretty close.
2,600 leave to work in Calgary.
2,300 leave Calgary to work in Airdrie.
But I always thought those numbers were low for commuters leaving Airdrie.

Geez, I'm between a rock and hard place: Support Suburbanite leeches, or Arms-length leeches. Ok, you win Airdrie! At least you leave each night.

Mayoral race so far:
First Name Last Name Nominated Position # of votes
Peter Brown 2310
Linda Bruce 1862
Ross Mann 873
Edward Skelding 33
I am surprised Brown has the lead. I thought Bruce was going to be a shoe-in. Woohoo!

I'm kind of surprised about this result. I didn't think Bruce did all that bad - certainly not that you'd expect an incumbent to lose.
LOL @ Jeff Willerton. Dude was an absolute joke in the Wildrose Alliance leadership race and it is funny to see him reduced to trying, and failing, to run for alderman in Airdrie.

Just got back from Mr Browns Victory bash at the Twin, made a good speech, commended Bruce on her time in public service to Airdrie, it was very classy. He's going to be great representing us over the next few years.

Aslong as the great snow removal (sidestreets with dumptruck and front end loader atleast in Sagewood) I will continue to be happy.
