Come help Noel and others tomorrow
Quote:
- If you are between the ages of 17 and 50 years old, in general good health and have provincial health coverage and willing to donate to any patient in need you could be the one to save someones life.
- Bring your Alberta Health Care Card
- Do not eat or drink 30 minutes prior to registering
- You will fill out an informal consent form and then have your cheek swabbed
- The entire process takes only 20 minutes
- We will have drinks and treats available for when you are done your registration
If you are a match to someone, the stem cell/bone marrow donation process is in most cases similar to donating blood.

I copied this from a piece of paper my mom printed out for me.
So tomorrow between 1-6 PM this will run in the St. James Elementary & Jr. High School. 2227 - 58 Avenue S.W. (a few blocks behind Central Memorial School)
You can read about Noel here..
http://www.calgarysun.com/news/alber.../15553746.html
http://thepeterboroughexaminer.com/A...aspx?e=2783163
He's in need of a Bone Marrow transplant, they have looked through 63 data bases in 42 countries and they have yet to find a match because of the lack of registered donors.
Ill be attending tomorrow, if you have the chance, I hope you will also attend.

I was just looking at the CBS website...

How do I donate bone marrow?
Bone marrow stem cell donation is a surgical procedure performed under anaesthesia. The collection physician will use special, hollow needles to withdraw liquid marrow from the back of your pelvic bones. Normally about a litre of fluid is taken. The procedure usually lasts from 45-90 minutes. The collection includes blood along with the stem cells from your bone marrow. Total volume ranges from under 0.5 litres to as much as 1.5 litres, depending on your size and the size of the recipient. Both blood and stem cells from your bone marrow are replenished within six weeks.

How is this anything like donating blood? Or am I reading the wrong information?
Also I'm in Edmonton, are they going to do any swabbing there?

I have a good friend who is a hematologist and a big proponent of marrow donation-- in the worst case, a very small amount of discomfort can literally save a life. Go donate.

I try to donate blood at least once a month but in reality more like once every three months.
Okay, I was pretty sure they had those bone marrow machines set up in the corner of the blood clinic but then I searched up the website and came up with this. To save a life it's totally worth it but it's a lot bigger commitment of potentially taking the day off, commuting to another city and getting put under rather than just have a needle in you for 30 minutes.

What happened to me when I turned 50 that made me unable to donate? I hate being old.

Nope. They ordered 200 kits. They told me that I could fill out the form on line and they would send me the kit to do it myself.

Hopefully that was because of a massive influx of possible donors and not someone only bringing a package of 10.

I did this a few weeks ago, my swabs are in the mail and should be here any day.
You have to read up on the process, then pass a little test (very easy), fill out some information on your health and your personal info. A few days later they will call you to discuss it, if you pass (ie there is nothing wrong with you) they will send the swab kit to you, you then swab your cheeks and send them back to them.
Sounds very easy
