As far as I know it's called entertainment,if you have a problem with an illusionist making people ooo an ahhh for money you should have a real problem with paying $200.00 to see millionaires play a kids game on ice!
My personal opinion is a guy like Copperfield is amazing, fake, yes. but far from "gay"

Never spoil yourself by reading up on how a magic trick or an illusion is done.
We had a psychic for our christmas party, and he was so terrible that I could figure out how he was reading minds.
I think you need to suspend disbelief and pretend that there is such a thing as magic for these tricks to really awe you.
Never show anyone. They'll beg you and they'll flatter you for the secret, but as soon as you give it up... you'll be nothing to them

Sorry....I was trying to make a joke. I understand the concept of an illusion.
I like this guy, he's a very polished entertainer. He was born in America and speaks English and Japanese. He's been on the TV here in Japan quite a bit performing his tricks, some of them are pretty cool. His name is Cyril Takayama.
I was very impressed by a magician doing tricks at our table, so impressed I went back again and again. 3 times he preformed @ our table, and not once did I see the moves he needed to do to make the trick work. I figured out how/what he needed to do, but the hand is quicker than the eye.
edit: I am in no way on the "fake and gay" bandwagon, I think the illusions are interesting. I was just honestly curious how he did the flying one and thought I would share with anyone else who was curious.

His greatest trick was convincing Claudia Schiffer he was straight.

I saw Lance Burton live in Vegas about 10 years ago, and the only tricks I remember were the one here with all the candles and birds (the actual routine is even longer), and one where he made a car disappear.
The reason I remember those two tricks?
I remembered the car becasue I thought, it isn't really that impressive to make a car disappear in a theatre that's designed specifically for that purpose.
I remembered the bird act because of all of the big illusions he did, that slight of hand routine was by far the one that I found the most impressive, as all he has to work with is his own hands.
