Mazda 3 vs VW Golf City
Ok so I'm between a Mazda 3 and a Golf City. Both similar price and similar features. But I would left over with a few thousand left to pay after my financing period is over due to a different way they do financing. Is the Golf worth it?
Thoughts pls thanks

If this was a comparison to the regular Golf it would be closer. But IMO, the Mazda 3 wins out against the city version. City is cheap, but the keyword is cheap.

i've had my 3 now for 5 years and it's been fantastic. plenty of trips back to BC, roadtrips to Vegas and Seattle, and not a single thing mechanical has gone wrong with it after 75,000 KM. it's been the most reliable car i've ever owned, and the handling is better than anything else in it's class that i've driven
however that stated, i'm not sure if i would buy one of the new ones after they butchered the design, the '10 models look flat out ugly compared to the older ones

Get a Mazda 3 because you don't see many of them on the road. Rarity is good.

What vehicle did you like more? This review I found online seems to suggest that either would be a good choice.

May I recommend you inquire what the cash purchase price would be for the vehicle and look to finance with your financial institution of choice before you sign papers? The discount the dealership would offer might make it worth your while.
The reason you are left owing money at the end with VW is because of their VW select program, where they give you smaller payments to make something more affordable, but at the end of 5 years you still have a principle balance owing. This would be simular to a 5 year term, 6-8 amortization. Doesn't seem like it makes much sense to me.
Base model, regular VW financing (not the VW select crap) over 5 years at 0.9% is about 300/month. Over 5 years Mazda offers 0% right now and it works out to about 300/month.
Again check for a cash purchase price rather than a finance price... If either give you $2,500 off for paying cash, finance it somewhere else for $270/month at 6% or lower and get a bank draft to pay them. At least that way you aren't paying extra principle so if you make extra payments they are actually worthwhile.

Id avoid the City VWs - they are the basic Mk4 design, only they are built in Mexico instead of Germany, thus, quality suffers.

My choice is the Mazda 3. There's a reason why a lot of people drive them. They're fun to drive, somewhat reliable (problems have popped up here and there).
But overall, a Mazda 3 is a pretty affordable "zoom zoom" car.

I've owned a Mazda 6 and a Golf, and I would say the Golf was more reliable and felt more "solid" than the Mazda, but that was a 1995 model. I haven't heard good things about recent models of VW's.
The Mazda 6 is a nice car and all, but there's just something about it that feels flimsy.

I love my 2006 Mazda 3.. I'll be selling it shortly (54,500km) because my girlfriend just inherited a prius, and we don't need two cars. I'll be sad to see my Mazda go, such a fun car, very versatile.

Own an 07 Mazda 3. Not a fan of it in the winter. Any other time of year when there is no snow it is a decent car to drive. Im not really helping because Ive neer been in the Golf.

I'd bet all the tea in China you could solve your issue with your Mazda by getting winter tires.
VWs in general are not reliable. The City is also totally gutless but I do think it looks classier than a 3.
Your best bet IMO is a car a couple years old in your price range that is actually cool.

why exactly aren't you a fan of it in winter? i have all-weather tires on mine for snow months and it handles great, i've been able to avoid a few accidents specifically because of how it handles in snow, and i've taken it over the Roger's Pass in blizzard conditions. the only cars i would rate higher than it would be AWD variants
