Default Diners Drive-ins and Dives... in Calgary

I think I've been watching too many episodes of Diners Drive-ins and Drives on the Food network. Some of the food on the show come from the most out of the way, non-descript places - it just blow my mind. It always makes me hungry watching that show. So it got me thinking, where are the best Diners Drive-ins and Dives in Calgary?

There are some obvious choices, such as Peters Drive-in, and there was a recent thread about a new BBQ lunch spot off of Blackfoot (forget the name). What else is out there that maybe not as many know about, or talk about? Or are all of the diners in Calgary just serving greasy crappy food?

So lets hear it - what are your favorites? And what are the best dishes that your favorite places serve?

Ho Won - best salt and pepper squid in all of Calgary... surly service, sketchy looking place but the S&P squid is to die for.

Two years ago I would have said one of the Nellie's.... but well that's more of a dive than anything else now.

The Ship Burger with Tomato vodka soup would easily be on my list and Tubby Dog (not sure if that fits into the criteria, but it is pretty close).

But I guess it has more to do with the show's criteria, from the last few episodes it seems that to make the list it's got to be a pretty unique joint. Not just character, but also a crazy take on the traditional grub.

Peter's is seriously garbage food nowadays.

Asian-run now, terribly rude, and they don't accept anything but cash.

"I would say that the f'n best burger that I ever had was at a bowling alley, cause' ah they suprise you there some of them always hired f'n some of the best cooks. And they ain't a restaurant but that doesn't mean that the cooking doesn’t put some pride in their burgers.”

Been meaning to grab lunch here for a while. Apparently the best poutine and Montreal smoked meat sandwiches in Calgary.

Ukranian Fine Foods on Cleveland Crescent. Place is awesome.

You get a huge cabbage roll, 6 perogies, and a bunch of kielbasa for 7 bucks. Some lunch hours the line up can be pretty big, but it is well worth it. The place is the definition of a dive. Card tables with plastic tablecloths, paper plates, and plastic cutlery. But the food is very authentic, and very filling.

I have - it's pretty good - but I'm not sure if it's the best in town. I like the place down in the beltline (Palace of Eats?)
