Palm Springs - Vacation Rental?
I am thinking about taking the family for a trip down to the Palm Springs area. We are looking into renting a house for a week. The houses look great, but I am a little suspicious of the process (particularly given the US economy, foreclosures, etc).
Does anyone have any advise on vacation rentals? Specifically in the Palm Springs area?

Stay away from Lake Elsinore.
My folks went in February and said it was nasty.
(edit: just looked at a map and realized it's not as close to Palm Springs as I thought :/ )

VRBO.com is pretty reliable. We've used it a number of times to rent in the US recently and have been very happy.

I go to Palm Springs once a year and I have rented from VRBO too and have enjoyed it.
If possible try and rent closer to downtown Palm Springs. Do go to the Cabazon name brand outlet mall too.
What time of the year are you think of going?

I go there once or twice a year for about six weeks total. I don't know if downtown Palm is where to go anymore, I prefer Palm Desert. There are some resorts that you can stay at, as the town is nothing special for kids. There is a 'zoo' and lots of sand if that is your thing. As long as you have a bunch of day trips planned (San Andreas Fault line, zoo, hikes, Joshua Tree, Flames game in LA is a two hour drive).
The area is pretty quiet. A few times I did hit up Disney, six flags and a few other places with roller coasters, but those are long days unless you plan on spending the night. I have driven to vegas from there as well.

That's why we rented a place with a pool.. go out in the morning to some excursion, then come back and swim the day away

Thanks for all of the replies.
We are looking at going in November or December. We are definitely looking at houses with pools, as it would be half of the fun for our toddler.
Anyone using rental agencies? Or just private listings? It looks like the agencies are more expensive (from a quick look).

I guess I was thinking of terms of two adults.
It is great to rent a house near downtown go out have a few drinks and walk home at night.
But if you are going out to eat go out to Roy's not so much for kids but if you can just go out with the wife the food and service is awesome

Not much help, but we're in Palm Springs right now. We used RCI and are staying at Oasis International and it is incredible. 9 pools, very quiet, great grounds, etc. We're about 15min drive to Cabazon (yes its worth it). We also did the drive to San Diego to go see the Chargers home opener. Very easy 2 hr drive. Apparently the Tram up the mountain is great, but its closed until mid OCtober.
