Malta is amazing- hot, very safe, amazing scenery, and not too crowded.
Depending on what you are into, I would recommend one thing if possible- rent a car!! If you cant rent a car though, staying in the Valletta area is probably a good idea, as it gives you good access to the entire island. When I was there, I was originally staying in Marskalla (sp?) in the SE, which was amazing, but took forever to get around via public transportation. I quickly switched to a hotel in Sliema, which was better.
A couple recommendations:
- do a day trip to Gozo. Easy enough to catch a ferry on the north side of the island. If you don't have a rental car, be careful what time you come back to the main island as the busses shut down early on weekdays. I had to catch a cab back to Valletta, which was around $60.
- the walk from Valletta to St Julians bay along the seawall is amazing.
- the best beach is golden bay I think. Not nearly as busy as some of the other higher rated beaches if I recall correctly.
- if you want luxury, the top end hotels in St. Julians bay are unreal. I dint stay there, but wish I had. If you want more of a local feel, there are plenty of options (and cheaper).
