Alberta Improves Energy Grades
Quote:
Alberta has taken strides toward becoming energy efficient, but there is plenty of room for improvement.
The province received a B+ on a 2009 report card by the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance released Thursday. The alliance has been putting out reports since 1999. The non-profit advocacy group bases its grades on building codes, product standards, public outreach and awareness, transportation, policy developments, leadership initiatives, government commitments and how plans have progressed
....
Alberta has made headway since 2007 when it squeaked by with a D+. It was the most improved of the provinces and territories, and ranked fifth overall, falling behind Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.
Alberta's higher grade is attributed to the Climate Change Strategy released in 2008, as well as adoption of a green building policy for new government-owned facilities.
The province also invested $36 million in an energy rebate program in April 2009 to encourage consumers to buy more energy efficient products. People who invest in energy efficient measures ranging from better insulation and heating to power-saving washing machines can apply for a rebate.
To date, around $16 million has been doled out to approximately 65,000 applicants.
