I'm in Okotoks for the week and walked by around 10:00 and there was still a ton of cop cars and cleanup happening. An accident that really didn't need to take place, but still makes me feel awful for the person involved. It was pretty ugly, and I can't see someone just walking away after getting hit like that.

I could never understand why people think they can beat the train.

Don't try and beat the train. The train always wins. Even if it's a tie, the train wins.

Sounds like they're both still alive, which is good news. It's just sad, because accidents like this are 100% preventable. I really wish people would just slow down and obey the law at railway crossings. Yes, it may cost you 5 minutes, but the alternative may cost you your life. I work for CP and I have had to attend some of these accidents and help pull pieces of people out of the remains of their vehicles. It isn't nice.

Please, obey the law and don't try and beat the train.

I bet the ratio of people beating the train to people getting hit by the train is like 100000:1. As long as you don't have really bad eyesight or depth-perception problems, you probably are okay to race the odd train now and then when you're confident of victory.

Trains can move much faster than people realize. There are also areas where the road crosses two parallel tracks and drivers may not be able to see a train on the second track. You don't need to have serious eyesight or depth perception problems to mis-judge - you're moving, the train is moving, and it can be deceptive.

There are two types of controlled crossing: lights & gates, or lights only. It is illegal to circumvent a crossing gate. If they're down, or coming down, stop. Flashing lights at a crossing with no gates are considered a stop & proceed if safe to do so. Either one is put there to save lives, so follow the rules and obey them.

Racing trains is stupid, period.
