Trains can move much faster than people realize. There are also areas where the road crosses two parallel tracks and drivers may not be able to see a train on the second track. You don't need to have serious eyesight or depth perception problems to mis-judge - you're moving, the train is moving, and it can be deceptive.
There are two types of controlled crossing: lights & gates, or lights only. It is illegal to circumvent a crossing gate. If they're down, or coming down, stop. Flashing lights at a crossing with no gates are considered a stop & proceed if safe to do so. Either one is put there to save lives, so follow the rules and obey them.
Racing trains is stupid, period.
