My firm, an independent junior brokerage house, is looking to hire up to two Energy Analysts (one focused on the domestic basin and one focused on international opportunities).
Key duties would be identifying and providing research coverage for emerging, high growth, E&P companies (market caps of $50MM to $500MM) and communicating insight and recommendations both internally to sales staff and externally to institutional accounts and/or retail brokers.
Successful candidates would need to have sufficient experience to be able to step immediately into a publishing role (not hiring at the associate level).
I foresee successful candidates to have one of two kinds of backgrounds.
1) Energy industry technical background
- P.Eng or P.Geol
- Experience in evaluating exploration opportunities
- Established network amongst other professionals working in the junior and emerging market segment
- Been involved with corporate or major asset transactions
- Able to explain the differences between intrinsic and market value
- Comfortable with balance sheets and income statements
2) Finance background
- CFA, CA or MBA
- Strong grasp of the workings of the financial markets
- Experienced in valuing corporations or asset purchases
- Familiar with the key value drivers for junior and emerging E&P firms
- Strong network with buy side firms and/or decision makers within the junior oilpatch
Other key general attributes:
- Highly motivated, entrepreneurial attitude
- Polished communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to 'sell' a concept or opinion
- Flexibility to travel and work long hours (when needed)
Because of our size and market position we are able to offer a great mix of work independence and flexibility along with significant earnings potential.
