The Fix Is In
Did anyone listen to this guy on the FAN 960 today?
He claims that games in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL & Soccer are being manipulated for TV ratings.
He also claims that new buildings for professional sports teams do not help generate revenue for cities.
Claims the Gretzky trade to the Kings was manipulated by the NHL.
Thoughts?

What if all of that time, emotion, and money has been wasted on a lie? What if the action on the field isn’t what it appears to be? What if you, and millions others like you, have been duped – outright lied to – by those franchises you hold so dear to your heart, all in the name of making an easy buck?
The leagues, hand-in-hand with the TV networks which pour billions of dollars into professional sports, have fixed their own games to squeeze every ounce of drama they can out of each season and to ensure you remain committed to their sport and glued to your TV.

Sounds a lot like the Michael Franseze guy from the Jim Rome show. Calims that there isn't a sport out there he hasn't rigged multiple times to make a tonne of cash

because the NHL profited so much from Calgary vs. Tampa, Edmonton vs. Carolina, or Anaheim vs. Ottawa finals. what an elaborate ruse it's all been

I dunno... 2 of those 3 american markets seemed to spike in fans and followers after their championship seasons... And it remains that way...

The NBA has definately been manipulated
The LA vs. Sacramento series in 2006 was definately fixed.
In basketball it is easy. All you need to do is assign refs that call games that favour one style of play of another. If a team plays real physical defense calling lots of touch fouls virtually hands the game to the other team.
Basebal owners entirely ignored the steroids era in an effort to boost ratings and then cracked down on players when public perception turned on them. Their blind eye toward steroids was definately manipulating the game in favour of TV ratings.
Football so much money is bet on it that any manipulation would be readily caught and there isn't much to gain in getting better playoff matchups in football as the superbowl is already a spectacle regardless of whose in it and you aren't selling a playoff series just single games so it is easier to hold interest.

Not to mention 2 of 3 Canadian franchises had spikes in their fan bases after loosing the finals.

Just like any conspiracy (9/11, moon landing, etc.) of these magnitudes, there are far too many people involved to keep it secret from the majority. Lots of wackos out there.

It's no secret soccer has been fixed at times, obviously the Italian league comes to mind, and I doubt any ref or player in Columbia with any sense is going to refuse an offer.
The NFL wouldn't be that hard to fix, just find an idiot player with a gambling, drug or dog fighting problem, take about 3 minutes to work out which wide receiver can be bought, not that it gaurentees a win but in some teams depending on the player it would be close to a lock.

When I was a kid, I used to listen to the Mounties PCL baseball games with my 6 transistor radio under my pillow. Those games made for late nights, especially when we played in Honolulu. The interesting thing, what I found out later, is that the play by play guys never travelled with the team. They received the game play by ticker tape and would create a realistic game atmosphere with recorded crowd noises, pitches hitting the catchers mitt, hits, home runs, etc. They fooled me into thinking I was listening to a live baseball game, so really how much of what we see and hear from our media is manipulated.
I'm not saying the games are fixed, but it wouldn't surprise me too much if some are influenced. I think the easiest way in hockey and basketball would be by suborning the refs. Of course I still believe that years ago, we got the short end of the stick against the Kings and Gretzky.

Except it doesn't really matter how many people are involved because the ones that do come forward are just discredited or just not believed. I can't see how this is possible in sports, too many random factors involved.
