BC Suspends contraversial testing of violent youth offenders
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-col...16:g4:r3:c0:b0
???
I'm sorry. I have to ask: When did this test become a good idea in the first place?
No $hit it was suspended.

The story says young SEX offenders, not violent offenders or general youth offenders.
I agree the test sounds strange but these arent your run of the mill brats, they are young SEX offenders - imo almost worse than people who kill because at least their victims suffering ends when they die.

Geez that's a tough one. On one hand it's probably better to gauge the severity of a sex offender's problems, but on the other hand that's some intense testing.

I can certainly see the intent of the study and where it's trying to go with it. The problem is the whole issue with the intensity of it. What I'd like to see though is another test to see if they can make a less aggressive version of it.

With this technique, the subject’s emotional responses to violence are systematically paired with a negative stimulation in the form of nausea caused by an emetic medicine administered just before the presentation of films depicting violent, and "ultra-violent" situations.

I herd about this on the radio this afternoon and they said that they would read the young offenders stories with varying degrees of sex and violence.

Does the test work? What is the accuarcy of this test and what are the side effects. The test sounds like child abuse but if it were highly accurate and did not have side effects would it be in the public good?
Also assuming it is only being done on real child sex offenders and not some kid who took a naked picture of his girlfriend it might be beneficial for society.

The test is pretty well standard for testing devient response. It is very effective as whilst an offender can (and generally always will) lie about what turns their crank, their physical response to a stimulas is unmistakable.
This is necesary if you want to have any idea whether treatment is working.

Ironically one of the techniques taught to offendors to stop them from offending is to smell amonia or rotten milk when they have fantasies or start to think about offending.

Im sure the real reason for them stopping this was the legal consequences of creating more pedophiles then they would catch and not the moral repugnance of the testing procedure.

When i first started reading the article, I was thinking it was a good idea to have a test which quantifies the risk of reoffending. As I read on, I realized they are showing porn, in many legal and illegal forms to underaged people.
That's like taking a pothead and giving him some crack to see if he is at risk for doing harder drugs. The risk of creating a bigger problem by messing up the kid is there.
I am shocked that enough people thought this was a good enough idea that it made it from the "hey I have an idea" stage to the "strap the thing to his already" stage, without someone stepping in.

Have to agree fully.
Honestly....
Teenage males will show arousal at the slightest breeze. Stick an electrode to "Doctor Feel Good" and we'd have a standing ovation!!!

Clearly it's a form of sexual abuse to do this and could further confuse the subject.
Despite the visual and audio "stimulation" who knows what they are thinking about anyhow?
I'm shocked this type of testing is done in 2010.

So let me get this straight. Our government thinks that attaching something to a young person's genitals, showing them adult porn, and then switching to images of infants while an adult describes pornographic actions on said infants, is some kind of therapy? Was this test designed by the sick f***s at 4chan?
F*** that is screwed up. Let the kids heal rather than scarring them deeper. How god damn disturbing is that? I am honestly appalled by this.
