How to connect my ps3 to my computer harddrive?
Hey all,
Been looking around on the net, and I can't seem to find any help that makes any sense to me.
I have one of the newer slim ps3s, windows 7 32-bit, and a telus internet set-up (which includes wireless router).
How do I set it so that I can watch video clips (from the computer) on the ps3?
I have tried creating a homegroup, network, sharing in windows media, but I must be doing something wrong. If anyone does this type of sharing, please help!
OR: if there is an easy way to "plug and play" an external drive, I could do that too, but I am completely lost right now!

How are the devices connected to the router? Is the router separate from the DSL modem or is it an all in one deal? My Telus router is an all in one D-Link but the problem with the router I have is that it treats wired connections and wireless connections as 2 different networks so they can't actually talk to each other. So I have to have my PS3 and PC both hooked up wired.
I use PS3 Media server to stream the videos because it will also transcode formats that the PS3 does not natively support.

I use a program called "PS3 Media Server" and it works great. You can get it here:
http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/
Once you install it on your PC, you need to keep it running. It doesn't use a lot of resources and there is an option to have it start at startup.
You can then choose which folders to share. Don't worry too much about the encoding settings and all of the fancy stuff - run it, pick some shared folders, and you're probably good to go.
Make sure that Windows allows it through the firewall (I can't remember if I was prompted to make an exception, or if it required one at all). Then, on your PS3, go to video and select "search for media servers". It should show up from now on whenever it is running on your PC.
It can handle so many formats - even full DVD images if you have ripped a DVD but haven't re-encoded it into a standard format. It also does music and photos too.
I download a bunch of video podcasts through iTunes and I have those folders shared to my PS3. That lets me watch some content on the PS3 instead of sitting on the PC.

Don't use an external drive just yet - you should be able to set it up to stream. Much easier in the long run. My long-ish post above assumes that the PC and PS3 are on the same network, subnet, etc. and that the PCs firewall isn't interfering.

I'm a fan of TVersity. Just install it and add your videos and music to the library. It'll then show up in the XMB.

Connect the PS3 and the PC to your router.
if you are streaming regular videos like wmv and avi, you can add them to your Windows Media Player in windows 7, and enable media sharing. The Windows 7 computer will now act as a DLNA server.
Your PS3 has the ability to auto discover any DLNA server on the LAN, so simply navigate to "video" and you should see your computer name in the list.
If it doesn't show, turn off your windows firewall.
If you are streaming HD content, then use mkv2vob to convert to a a format that PS3 understands (most HD stuff comes in mkv), then use tversity (which acts as a DLNA server, but it can handle vob) to stream it to your PS3.

Vuze is what I use to stream, and copy movies and music from my computer to my PS3. Simple process, with some conversion needed in most cases.

Computer is wired to the router, and the ps3 is wireless. It is not possible to change the connections.
Tried ps3 media server as suggested by Jimmy Stang- program loads, but can not find ps3 and asks if it is turned on...
Will try Tversity.

Also tried TVersity... files show up in the program, and I say to share, but when I go to connect to media servers, it says none are found. Would a restart of the computer or the ps3 matter? What about the telus router having one wired and one wireless connection (both use the same "network" when I connect to the internet).

Make sure you are logged into your PS3, also make sure that you have the PS3 on before you run PS3 media server.
The program is great except for streaming 720/1080 programs. I just plug in a USB drive and play video off it that way.

Anyone have any tips for streaming 720/1080? I have a couple that I would like to try watching but the ps3 media server ends up pausing while watching. Anyone know the best way for HD rips? I can't use thumb drive to ps3 since file is bigger then 4

WDTV media player would be the best way for streaming 720p, I heard it still staggers in 1080p. Check futureshop/bestbuy weekend for usb drive sales, you can often find a 8gb/16gb for $15-35

What model router is it? If it is the same as mine you might be out of luck then. The one I have does not allow wireless and wired connections to interact with each other. I have a D-Link DVA-G3810BN/TL

I use TVersity and works just fine for me, ask your bro it should be just fine.
If not I'm sure I could come by to take a look at it at some point.

I have that one... but with black antenae on it. I also have a d-link that telus "gave me" so if I can hook that up and make it work that'd be nice.

Mine has the antenna too, its just hidden in the shot. Do you have Telus TV as well? is the other d-link the same model?

I used to live in a condo, and we had a d-link and telus TV there. We moved to a house, and during the move I misplaced my d-link and switch that Telus gave me... so the tech didn't charge me for it and said he returned it.
So now I have a telus modem (black box), wireless modem/router (silver box), and the d-link modem/wireless router.
We do have telus TV.

It might be easier to just buy a 16 gb stick, or a cheap used external at this rate... I checked with a 2gb stick and although it holds only 3 tv shows, it might do for the short term...

Well since you have TTV you will have to keep the silver box connected. You could however connect the other D-Link to the silver box and route your computer/ps3 through that and try connecting. Just disable the wireless on the silver box so that you don't get the ssid's and networks confused.
