Default Jon Rheault article

Jon Rheault is on a tryout contract with the Heat...

http://www.abbotsfordheat.com/ViewAr...CLID=204937180

"As unlikely offensive heroes go, Rheault ranks right up there. Prior
to joining the Heat, he had just five goals in 63 previous AHL games
with the Manchester Monarchs and Providence Bruins. He's matched that
total in the post-season alone, and on Monday morning he found himself
third in AHL playoff goal-scoring, trailing only Hershey Bears
teammates Alexandre Giroux and Andrew Gordon"

"Rheault's magnificent mane is a story in itself. The Deering, New
Hampshire product hasn't trimmed his hair since July 1 of last year,
and the plan is to donate his locks to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths
program, which makes free wigs for women who have lost their hair
during cancer treatment."

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe Rheault is simply signed to a tryout contract with the Heat and can be signed to a pro contract by anyone. If his rights were to belong to anyone though it would be LA as he spent most of the season with their farm team. I don't know quite how he came to be in Abbotsford from there, perhaps he was let go by the Monarchs.

I definitely don't claim to be an expert in contract status and minor league transactions so take this with a grain of salt.

Soooo....he's essentially a free agent?

Well I believe he has to play out his ATO. Usually it is 25 games.

Not sure how it works with AHL ATO's but with an NHL ATO (i.e. training camp invites) the team has exclusive rights to sign the guy until it expires or he's released.

Sure sounds to me that he's a free agent. If he was still signed with LA, he'd have an AHL contract and wouldn't need a PTO contract.

I'd invite him to next seasons training camp to see if he can earn a contract. So far all he's shown is a hot streak, and we'll see if he can sustain it.

^^^Agreed. Probably just a hot streak, but the odd time a player finds success in another team's system. How many ex-Flames or prospects can we say that about?

St. Louis, Wilson. That's about it.

Anderson, Giguere, Roloson, Commodore, Montador.

Not resounding success, but decent NHL careers.

I think Savard was always earmarked for success, and had some while with Calgary. My question was more to do with how a player can underperform under one system, but his next coach, captain, or whatever gives him what he needs to be successful.

For instance, would Bryan Cameron have developed into a solid prospect for the Kings if Tippet, not Crawford was the coach at the time?

So this guy has almost a year's full of hair growth? How does he keep it all under his helmet or does it flow out the back?

So umm, is this guy signed by the Flames in any capacity yet? Or is his contract still with Abbotsford only?

I know they are only youngsters and AHLers and prospects but this guy looked like Cammalleri yesterday.

Pretty sure it's just an AHL contract but here's a quote from Playfair.

Quote:
Flames Young Stars Head Coach Jim Playfair, "Jon Rheault was able to earn a contract with us by displaying his tenacity and enthusiasm out there for us last year in the playoffs. His ability to create and find open ice gave him opportunities to succeed with Mikael (Backlund) tonight.

I heard on the radio today that if a team offers him an NHL contract, the Flames have 14 days to match it.

In the lean years we had a prospect on an AHL contract and Bobby Clark swooped in and signed him to an NHL contract and we lost him. Don't remember if he amounted to anything or not, but the optics were horrible. Typical crap that went on in those days, so I'm glad to hear we have 14 days to decide whether to keep him or not.

Ryan Bast

We ended up trading him with an 8th rounder for a 3rd rounder and didn't lose him for nothing.

He only played 2 games in the NHL.

Glad to hear we didn't lose him for nothing due to Clarke's foul up but the incompetence by our GM (fletcher I believe) for getting in that position, shows just how bad some GMs can be.
