Default driving: calgary to squamish

the gf just bought some tickets to the squamish equinox rock festival (http://squamishmusicfestival.com/pages/home.php) and i am wondering what the best route is to take to drive there? thru vancouver or rout 99 thru pemberton via kamloops? we are looking to do the drive in one go, so time is a factor, not so much the scenery.

It depends on what day you are going and what time you would be arriving in the lower mainland. If it's a weekday and you are going to be in hope between 4 PM and 7 PM, I would avoid going through the fraser valley on the #1 as chances are with the traffic jam you will experience, going the other way prob won't be much slower.

we will be driving down on friday, leaving here very early. i was afraid of hitting greater vancouver around rush hour on a friday, so maybe route 99 is the safe way to play it.

Yup if you are leaving Calgary early on a Friday...I would take a chance on 99. Not only are you going to hit the Langley City hold up, you prob hit some traffic on the North Shore as well.

I just came back from that route and 99 is probably the way to go...if you could go to Kamloops on Thursday night your Friday drive will be much easier FWIW.

The kids call it Squampton.

While you're up there, go hike The Chief, it'll kick your ass. That or I'm really out of shape. Probably the latter.

Just so you know Highway 99 or better known as the Duffy Lake Rd. is slow going despite the little traffic. You will see a lot of motorcycles though (great ride) and I have heard it has been upgraded since I was on it last year.

This reminds me of a joke I heard in BC a long time ago.

My girlfriend asked me to kiss her where it's smelly, so I took her to Squamish.

Traffic or not HWY 99 is going to be quicker then going through Vancouver. HWY 99 can be slow for short periods but in general is not as slow or bad as people make it sound. If you're not comfortable driving windy mountain highways with high exposure I'd suggest you plan on making the drive from Cache Creek to Pemberton during daylight hours.
