Default So I'm moving from 1 rival city to another - Moving to Toronto

Hey CP

So I got a new job with the Feds, so I won't be the CP health guy anymore. The good news is that I leave Edmonton. The bad, I'm off to Leafs Land

Anyways, I was hoping CP can provide me with some advice for moving to Toronto and getting set up

The most important things:

1. What's the recommended Internet provider in Toronto? I don't download much, but it helps to have highspeed when on Xbox Live

2. Best way to watch Flames games on TV (Cable vs Satellite TV packages)

3. Scoring tickets to games at the ACC (Flames play Toronto around New Years IIRC)

4. If we're being nomadic, and not moving any furniture, what's the best way to ship our stuff to Toronto. Best way to transport my desktop

any other advice and comments welcome

Thanks!

Lol, relocating across the country and first concern is Xbox live and ISP's.

To answer number 4. Uhaul it across the country. Make an adventure of it. And save thousands at the same time. You should be able to do Toronto in 3 days, but take a week and stretch it out. There is some neat stuff to see on the way, but by far the most moving thing you will see is the Terry Fox Memorial site near Thunder Bay. I really got choked up there.... greatest Canadian of all time IMHO.

Congrats. Don't believe a large majority of what you might hear here, but Toronto is an awesome city. Great food and lots to do. Winters suck though.

I'm with Rogers. You'll hear varying opinions on who to go with. You also have Bell and Telus.

NHL Centre Ice. Rogers Super Sports Pack.

Good luck Ha ha. All the games I've been to at the ACC were hook ups from season ticket holders I know in Toronto.

Sorry, no advice here!

Toronto's a great city, so enjoy it. Tons of great food, whether you want something cheap or something more pricey. Little cultural centre pockets like Greektown, Little Italy, Chinatown, Koreatown, so check those out. Summer in Toronto is awesome with tons of festivals every weekend pretty much... Caribana, Taste of Italy, Greekfest, Beerfest, etc.

Try to live near the TTC - very convenient.

Also, right on the subway line, at College Station, there's a provincial government depot where you can switch over all your identification like Driver's License, Health Card, etc.

You'll love it here. It's a whole different experience compared to Edmonton, or anyplace in Alberta, really.

Youll have a blast in TO...great town.

1. Internet providers are basically Rogers and Bell. I prefer Rogers along with their phone and cells.

2. I use Cable...but watch most of mine on the internet.

3. Tough to ever get tickets at the ACC but where there is a will there is a way.

4. I used a major mover...get 5 or 6 prices and make sure you ask if the number they provide is firm or if there are adders for any reason.

Lots of Flames fans out here, and most Maple Laffs fans like us because we supplied their team with Gilmour in the 90s and Dion last year. We get the last laugh usually...until last year.

Thanks for the comments guys
I've been to Toronto many times before, but now that I'm moving there, I definitely needed CP's help on the stuff I wouldn't normally think of.
My gf happy though, she's moving moving home

I made the same move myself a couple of years ago. T.O. gets a bad rep for a lot of unfounded reasons, it's a great city. Big, cultural, lots to see and do... as for your questions:

1. What's the recommended Internet provider in Toronto? I don't download much, but it helps to have highspeed when on Xbox Live

2. Best way to watch Flames games on TV (Cable vs Satellite TV packages)

As far as cable goes, in Toronto proper Rogers pretty much runs the show. There is another provider called Cogeco, but I don't think you can get their service unless you are in one of the boroughs. As such, I personally have all my cable/net services bundled with Ted's company, it's fairly comparable to Shaw in Calgary (although the cable tiers themselves are a bit fussy - you might find you aren't really getting great value for your cable line-up unless you go with Rogers' "VIP" package, but that requires forking over a little extra). Can't really comment on Bell, which is also prominent here... beyond that, I also don't have much to say.

3. Scoring tickets to games at the ACC (Flames play Toronto around New Years IIRC)

I saw the Flames/Leafs last November at the ACC. Bought my tix on StubHub. They weren't too horribly marked up at the end of the day... and we had an absolute blast at the game. The ACC is a great facility, great staff, we didn't get a lot of flack from the Leafs fans, and they have giant beers on tap for about $10, if you do one of those per period with an extra thrown in somewhere along the way, you'll be feeling just fine come the end of the night.

You can try getting them for face value on TM or some other route - I didn't bother stressing, paid the premium, didn't give it a second thought, and had a great night. Probably do it again this season.

4. If we're being nomadic, and not moving any furniture, what's the best way to ship our stuff to Toronto. Best way to transport my desktop

Desktop... odds and ends? Pack it in a suitcase and bring it on the plane. I have heard you can rent these things called PODS to get larger quantities of stuff cross-country for a decent rate. Might want to check into it if you're thinking of bringing anything substantial.

My 2 cents. Welcome to Toronto!

Toronto is a great city!

3. Good luck as others have said, have been to the two Flames games held there in the last 2 years, got them through the hotel I was staying at, paid a ridiculous price, but we had such a great time it was well worth it.

There are always lots of scalpers on the street on game day.

Hope you like wicked humid summers.

For internets, by far the best providor is Tek Savvy

http://teksavvy.com/en/default.asp

They're local, cheaper and provide 100% better customer service than any of the big companies.

Enjoy what Toronto has to offer as a big, diverse city.

Is there a particular area you know you want to live? What kind of housing are you looking for?

I would offer up my opinions but everyone else has pretty much already taken my bits.

Welcome to Toronto - It's not that bad! (Hope you have air conditioning in the summer)

In my humble opinion Toronto itself sucks donkey balls

Lower Mississauga/Oakville is much nicer and cleaner and you won't get the most atrocious traffic jams in Canada.

Except that to get to downtown, it's an atrocious traffic jam on the QEW. If you live in central Toronto you can walk most places and take transit other places quite easily.

Is the job downtown Toronto?

We haven't decided where we are living yet, probably closer to mid-town. The job's in the North York area, but I don't mind taking the TTC as it's going to be against rush hour traffic.
In the mean time, staying at my gf's parent's place until we havea chance to get our bearings and look for an apartment

NHL Centre Ice sounds like the best way to watch the Flames game. Thanks CP

Even if his job is downtown the Go train is fast, I worked near Colburne/Young and most times my travel time was faster than my bosses. I lived in Mississauga, he lived in Forest hill.

All I can say is if you hate transit don't live anywhere near Toronto

For moving, and I know its expensive, and I know there are some stories out there, but as someone who has moved a lot and at good distances (e.g. Cgy to Van, Van to Halifax, Halifax to Ott, etc etc)....I would suck it up and pay for movers. We have done u-haul, we have done ourselves, we have done friends, and on our last move we did actual movers. Well worth it in my opinion.

And if you are now the feds, did you by chance get a moving amount of $$ or?

And welcome, by the way, what Department ?

Yeah, I second that. I've moved around a lot and did the U-Haul thing a couple of times, and next time, I am going to hire professionals. One of my firends just moved to New Jersey and the movers came in, packed everything and had it loaded into the van incredibly fast. If your time is worth anything, then it makes it worthwhile.

Coincidentally, I might be moving to Toronto soon. I've already been offered a transfer, but I am going to wait until after the summer to decide.

Seems to be a lot of Calgarians moving out this way (at least in this thread).

For a while, it was definitely the other way around. Has something changed?

If you have never driven accross Canada I would go the Uhaul route. It is a fun drive. I really depends on how much stuff you are taking. If you can fit all the stuff in one of those little Uhaul trailors and have vehicle to tow it it makes good road trip.
