What is the "official" method for medal standings. According to CBC, China is first with the most gold medals. According to SI, the US is first with most overall medals.

I think there should be a weighted score; ex. 3 points for gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze.

[And then, divide by the population of the country, to see who is doing the best in per capita?]

I don't think it really matters because nothing happens with the rankings - it's just a neat tally they're keeping track of.

I say most medals in total though.

Maybe something should happen with the rankings. Like, the country with the best medals/population ratio gets a seat on the UN security council until the next Olympics.

I think the country with the most gold medals should get special mention. Overall though the medal count should be done by which country has the most medals period.
