I am a u of C student looking for a summer job. The usual: good pay, good hours, etc. is what I am looking for.
I am taking a degree in geology and geophysics (double major). Jobs that are related to that are great but not required... I am willing to do anything if the pay and hours are reasonable.
Can anyone provide me with a good place to work? Can anyone point me in a good direction? Thanks!

don't be too picky if what you're looking for doesn't show up - and apply for everything that looks decent
the usual check out u of c career centre website for postings...get them to help you with your resume etc.
try cold calling companies - send in your resume/cover letter even if there's no posting up

This always works... do some research into companies that you would like to work for or would give good experience for your resume.
With that list, dress up nice, and hand deliver the resumes to their offices. Cover letters optional, but recommended. Don't just drop it off... ask if there are any present or future openings and ask to speak to the person in charge of hiring. You want to speak to that person and have a mini-interview. Your chances increase greatly.
Throwing out a generic resume/letter by fax or e-mail to a ton of companies doesn't work too well.

Have you thought about registering in co-op? It's sometimes easier that way depending on your major. I'm not sure about geology and geophysics, but in mine (envi. sci), there are quite a few job postings.
It sucks that you have to make monthly reports and pay for the credit hours, but a lot of places only go through co-op to hire students these days, and it looks good on your resume.

Something I did a few summers ago is work for Vector Canada.
I am sure most of you guys have had the "knife people" come to your house and try and sell you 900 dollar knives.
I was there for about 2 weeks. It wasnt my thing.
But you said you are willing to do "anything."
I am taking a degree in geology and geophysics (double major). Jobs that are related to that are great but not required... I am willing to do anything if the pay and hours are reasonable.
The pay was 17.50/hr when I was there, and you had flexible hours, and probably as many as you wanted.
Talk to Angie McDougall. They will hire you for sure.

Are you serious????
It's called a summer student job. And if he's a G&G student I don't think he'll have much trouble finding a job (assuming he's relatively competent, and has decnet marks). And it's 4 months, not 2.
That being said, Redvan, I think you may be a little too late. You should have been looking for a summer job (Assuming you want one in your field), in about Dec. The company I work for has already sent out summer job offers to the students they intend to hire. Good luck.

Actually yes they do. Most of the oil exploration companies will hire interns for the summer. It gives them a good look at prospective employees. My girls have both done this type of thing in the summers.
One of them will be graduating in May with a degree in Geology and Geophysical Engineering, so ya it is possible and the money is really good.

Glencoe Golf Course. They pay about $12.50 an hour for the easiest job of your life.
Of course, the hours are usually 6-11am... nice to get off before most of your friends are even up, but sucks to go to work whem some of your friends are just going to sleep. Also, you basically have to be in bed by 10:30 if you want to feel human the next day.
Still, decent cash for easy work.

He clearly stated he was in University, so that 4 months not two, just to get that out of the way. And it happens each and every summer with millions of students all across Canada. You're a bit sheltered aren't you Jordon?

Worst case scenario, register with a flexible staffing firm, at least you'll have money rolling in while you wait, and you never know they might find you something thats summer long.
ou can expect to be paid anywhere between 10 and 15 bones per hour

Everytime I post, it's always Calgary Flames coming to the attack. I'm just looking for suggestions guy, and yes I do take things like what you said personally. Why do you have to be so bitter? Grow up a bit.
To everyone else, thanks for the help. If you haven't suggested anything yet and know of some other things I can try please post. When you apply you have only a 10% chance of getting a call... so I need as many ideas as I can get. Thanks!

I really don't know anything about the scheduelling of University, so I just assumed it was 2 months. and secondly I personally don't see any reason why a corporation would hire for just a matter of a few months. Unless it's an internship.
So I appologize to REDVAN for my lack of knowledge in the subject, and I wish you luck. The McDonalds jab was just a light-hearted one.. didn't mean to sound so harsh

You can't see ANY reason why a company would hire just for a few months?
Obviously you weren't trying very hard. Or you're extremely uncreative. Or clueless about the different kinds of jobs out there. Who knows.
You've never heard the term "summer student"? It's a pretty commonly used term in big companies.

Well, its pretty obvious.
The student needs work experience and a decent wage.
The business needs joe-work done for dirt cheap.
These things mesh quite nicely. My company hires a dozen summer-students each year, after a pretty rigorous interviewing process.
Summer-students are great semi-skilled cheap labour for businesses, and these jobs provide great resume material for the students.

Good points... I will admit I am green when it comes to post secondary type stuff. I'm only JUST getting into it next fall going to SAIT after working a year at Superwhore, and a couple of years as a work from home Web developer since I graduated High School.

Yeah, I think you have some catching up to do, Jordon. It's kind of common knowledge about summer students / co-op positions / internships. One of things company's can gain is future employee's and try and nab some of the top students in the cutting edge stuff (ie. I'm planning on doing Nano, and last I heard, Husky Oil is bending head over heals for students in Nano).
See any of Petro-Canada, PCL Construction, RIM, Telus, Nortel, Atco, ect ect about student employment and you will see TONS.
As for jobs... yeah, your late. Very late. Right now is mostly 2nd round for most companies. For geology, I believe you start looking in Sept and Jan for summer jobs.
So you might be a little hooped for a high paying job that has a nice exect chair and VIP parking. Right now... take what you can get. At this time, you'd probably be lucky with data entry.
