Stamps/CFL Offseason
The Stamps have lost special teams coach Craig Dickenson. To replace him they have promoted Mark Kilam.

Isn't Kilam used to coach a high school football team here in Calgary? Or I got confused with someone else. I thought Dickerson were a good coach last season but for some reason he changed his personnel. We used to see Browner on the coverage team, the first guy to hit the returner. Yes, he gets so anxious sometimes but he did a great job. This season Craig took him out.

I wonder if this was a polite way of dismissing him as I figured if any coaching changes were made it would be first in special teams. The entire unit was horrible this year especially punt returns. Hopefully the team parts ways with Howell as well as his <5 yard returns have gotten old.

All I have to say about the Stamps offseason is they had better get Reynolds to put ink to paper. I'm looking at buying seasons tickets this year but I'm holding off until he gets locked up.

Interesting. Craig Dickenson along with Dave Dickenson and Ted Hellard were on my flight to Phoenix last Thursday with golf-bags in tow. Maybe something happened on the golf course!

Good.
Hopefully Cortez leaves/gets fired also.
Still undecided if I want Chris Jones to return.

Ackles has stepped down.

Scott Ackles has stepped down as Calgary Stampeders president to become general manager of the 2011 Grey Cup in Vancouver. Ackles says he is making the move with mixed emotions. The Vancouver native will be returning to his hometown but says leaving Calgary is difficult.

With Andrus being let go, you can bet that Cortez will get at least a look in Toronto.

Does one player really make or break your decision?

It shouldn't in most cases, but Reynolds' value to the Stamps rivals that of Miikka Kiprusoff's to the Calgary Flames. The Stamps are fighting to stay out of last place without Reynolds.
The entire passing game is based on play action and the fact that linebackers are always kept honest because of Joffrey's presence. Cortez runs a real high-risk passing game with lots of 20-25 yard layered routes. He doesn't believe in dinking and dunking, he won't use check-down routes and he rarely ever uses screen passes, swing passes, hitch routes, and shovel passes.
With all due respect to Henry Burris, Reynolds IS this football team right now.
I'm not paying good money to watch a 8-10 football team all next summer when I can be spending my weekends in Windermere playing golf. It's a different story with a 13-5 calibre club who could win the Grey Cup and likely will (with Reynolds).

Dickenson stepping down is his own personal decision from what i've read.
Good for Kilam. He's worked his way up there for sure.

And on the Bart Andrus story, found this interesting:
Quote:
Andrus just never really got Canada
David Naylor
For a final word on dismissed Argos head coach Bart Andrus, I'd like to share a story.
During Saturday of Grey Cup week, I ran into Bart on a street corner in Calgary. Despite the many critical things I'd written about the job he'd done with Toronto, Bart was always very pleasant with me and this was no exception.
We chatted for a brief while about football and then he said to me, "Do you know where there is a sports bar around here? I want to watch the NCAA Divsion I-AA playoffs."
To which I said I didn't think any bar in Calgary (or Canada, or any TV in Canada) would have the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. I suggested he try to see if he could find it on-line somewhere if he had a computer with him.
The point of this story was summed up by my friend Michael Landsberg, host of TSN's Off The Record, when I told it to him later that week.
"Bart doesn't understand where he is," said Michael.
And that was true in so many ways.
There was so much for him to learn about the culture of the CFL, its players and its rules but he never really got it. He never really understood where he was, that he wasn't in America any more.
Just like that day on the street corner in Calgary.

Kind of funny the headcoach of a CFL team trying to find a place to watch an NCAA game on Grey Cup weekend in the host city. I can understand him wanting to watch the NCAA games on saturday, but really, let's be serious. The Queens/Dinos game was on Saturday. If anything, pubs should have that on tv. Plus all the Grey Cup hype.

I'd have no problem with "Big Game" Burris being moved along as well.
I'm awfully tired of his schtick....

yea, only problem is we would have to replace him. not sure who we do that with, unless we want to wait and develop a new qb (or hope Tate becomes amazing over the offseason). as much as reynolds is this team, we need a qb that can run and throw as well. Tate is still a year or two away from being ready to start imo. but i hope i'm wrong. otherwise we look to bc and see who they lose (although that will likely be pierce, who i do not want as he is one hit away from done)

Browner worked out for the Vikings and now Tsoumpas has worked out for the Fins.
http://communities.canada.com/calgar...-tsoumpas.aspx
Tsoumpas would be a huge loss for the Stamps on the o-line.

I don't know why this is unusual? CFL teams have to constantly scout NCAA football games.

I know. But trying to watch it on the Saturday of Grey Cup weekend in the host city and the day of the Vanier Cup, I don't think it's gonna work.

Yup. There's a lot better quality of players in the 1-AA Playoffs than there is in the Vanier Cup.
Either way, the Vanier Cup was on at 10am Calgary time. A quick look on ESPN shows that there was 11 1-AA playoff games on that Saturday. Isn't it possible for him to watch both? I love all these people that act like the Vanier Cup is a big deal when no one in Canada could care less about the CIS the rest of the time.
