Afghan mineral wealth $1 trillion: report
The war-torn country of Afghanistan sits atop nearly $1 trillion US in valuable minerals, senior American military officials said Monday.
According to a report in the New York Times on Monday, aerial surveys of the region as far back as 2006 have suggested the presence of multiple valuable minerals including iron, copper, cobalt and gold.
...
Metals with much more contemporary uses such as niobium and lithium have also been discovered. An internal military memo refers to Afghanistan as "the Saudi Arabia of lithium," the report said.
Lithium is a key metal used in next-generation batteries for mobile electronic devices.

I hope this is used wisely for the humane and social development of that country. I would love to see this wealth returned to the people that have suffered through so much there.
That said, I am extremely naive to world issues and political realities, and therefore, my opinion means very little. Ha.

I don't think anybody will be tapping into the wealth anytime soon so it probably doesn't even matter that it's there.

This is a windfall for Afghanistan if it can be exploited properly.

So with all this new found lithium, will we soon be advocating against buying 'blood batteries' for our electric cars?

I think so too. It's the first "real" reason for the west to want to stabilize the country.

And Africa has some of the richest diamond deposits in the world. It simply isn't helpful when your government can't find it's ass with both hands.

This would be good news for Afghanistan only if they can secure those mines, and exploit them. But with the allied armies looking at getting out, thats a pretty tall order, and you know that those resources are something that the Taliban doesn't want the current government to get a hold of.
With the report from the London School of Economics that was recently released that said that there was proof that not only was Pakistans ISI continuing to arm and supply the Taliban, but they had members on the ruling council, its pretty clear that the Allied troops are not going to be able to put a serious dent in Taliban activities as long as Pakistan gives them a safe haven.
Until Pakistan shows a willingness to reform the ISI and shut down the safe havens its going to be next to impossible to knock the Taliban back.

Stability doesn't mean it has to be on western terms. If the Taliban keeps its brand of theocracy internal, I can see the west leaving them alone.
