Default Shopping in BC and Washington. Do Albertans have to pay pst/sales tax?

I know before when i went down to Seattle you could show them your AB driver's license and you wouldn't have to pay their sales tax. Is that still the case now?

Also looking at buying some computer stuff in Vancouver. Do we have to pay the PST?

Thanx!

Washington is still tax free for you Alberta folk.

You come to BC though, and you pay our tax.

Thats correct because the product is shipping to Alberta.

If you picked it up in Vancouver you'd pay . . . oh yes . . . you'd pay.

Not only do we Albertans have to pay BC sales tax, but technically if you're from BC and shop in Alberta you're still supposed to pay the BC sales tax. I doubt it's enforced much for individuals, but it is for businesses - we got audited a few years back since we have Alberta and BC offices to make sure we were paying PST on any equipment or computers we bought in Alberta and used in BC (and it wasn't just things kept in BC - if we used a laptop for more than 2 weeks in our BC office then sent it back to Calgary we were required to pay partial PST on it).

So i just took a look at the Canada Customs site.

You can only bring back $50 worth of stuff if you go for a nite? Was that changed recently or was it always that low?

It's always been that low. Really though, all you need to do is pay the duty and possibly the gst on the items you're bringing back so if you're spending few hundred bucks it's still worth it. Really all you're out is the duty because if you bought whatever goods it is down there up here you would be paying the gst anyway.

From Wikipedia:

Residents of Canada and US states or possessions (only US and Canadian locations having a sales tax of less than 3%, e.g., Oregon, Alaska & Alberta) are exempt from sales tax on purchases of tangible personal property for use outside the state. Stores at the border will inquire about residency and exempt qualified purchasers from the tax.

It's why Spokane is such a fun place to go!

It's been that low for a long time.

You will be charged GST on overages, and duty (if applicable). Anything made in the US will be duty free and you only pay GST. It's still worth paying.

Feel free to bring me some Copenhagen... Costs $4 there, $22 here...

Not every store follows this, best to ask before you purchase..

This exemption is only available at the time of purchase. Sellers are not required to make such tax exempt sales. If the seller chooses to collect the sales tax, buyers can not request a refund to the Department.

Most stores all you have to do is show your AB driver's licence, while others require you to fill out some information on the bottom of the sales slip. The only store that has refused to do this is the Lululemon outlet in Burlington. As a reminder, it is only on consumable goods for personal use.

Living in BC, I've recently ordered a couple of things from Memory Express. Free shipping and no PST made the deals attractive. I've done the same thing with an Ontario store but with BC bringing in the much despised HarmonizedSalesTax, I think it may be short lived.

Why is the HST so despised? Isn't it just the total of the PST and GST?

Because the HST will apply to everything, including stuff that was GST-only before. Food, coffee, services, books, children's clothing, etc.

It's already pretty expensive to live here, so no wonder people are mad.

I buy what I can when in Calgary (or some states, like Oregon), but it's not like I can go to either very often.

There has to be a reason why a Liberal provincial government would accept a Federal Conservatives HST proposition?

i think the fed's are giving the province a crap load of $$ for putting in the hst.

they say it will save us $$, but i don't see how.

i own my own business and don't pay pst on my major equipment purchases. now i'll have to pay the pst even though i'll just get it back at the end of the year. my main beef is why should the gov't have thousands of my dollars interest free for the better part of a year? (my last 2 major purchases totalled $85,000.... so add an additional $4250 for pst that i'd now have to pay and then get back months later)

i think in the maritime provinces when they introduced the hst it was less than the gst/pst combined.... but that's not happening in bc
