In all fairness, $800 was a lot of money back then.

He was present at the birth of cool on April Fool's Day, 1976: Co-founder — along with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak — of the Apple Computer Inc., Wayne designed the company's original logo, wrote the manual for the Apple I computer, and drafted the fledgling company's partnership agreement.
That agreement gave him a 10 percent ownership stake in Apple, a position that would be worth about $22 billion today if Wayne had held onto it.
But he didn't.
Afraid that Jobs' wild spending and Woz's recurrent "flights of fancy" would cause Apple to flop, Wayne decided to abdicate his role as adult-in-chief and bailed out after 12 days. Terrified to be the only one of the three founders with assets that creditors could seize, he sold back his shares for $800.

It takes more than just a little bit of money to succeed. You need balls too.

Apple's original logo sucked, pretty much the opposite of everything they've built their brand around:
He would have dragged the company down (not sure if serious ).
Based on what I've heard of Jobs and Woz in those days, I can understand his reluctance. It's easier to risk everything you've got when you don't really have much to lose.

I believe the owner of McDonalds sold the company for $100,000. Probably would have been better to hold onto a share.

he chickened out after 12 days? did he not know what he was getting in to?
he says over and over in that article how 'bad he is at business'
seems like he lacks any confidence in himself.
good luck @ the slots tho...

To be fair, when it started he had two young kids who couldn't do anything but fight with each together, one brilliant guy who tinkered in his garage and had ideas all over the place but couldn't focus it together. Another guy who was all marketing genius and selling products to shady companies that they hadn't made yet. And both guys were broke dropouts. Wayne was the only guy with any assets that debtors could seize over the failure of Apple computer. But I'm guessing that he's been bad at business his whole life and therefore, that paranoia factored in to how he chickened out after 12 days.
Speaking of founders, what does Wozniak really do? Jobs is in the limelight all day. Woz just sort of disappeared.

12 days is barely enough to be apart of a company.
Snooze you loose, sounds like someone lost his balls.

He got a little nuts back in the day, which culminated in him crashing his plane. When he got out of the hospital, he took stock of his life and decided he wanted to go back to the obscurity of just being a quiet tinkerer. I think this is when he invented the universal remote.
Anyway, Jobs refused to accept his resignation and to this day Woz still gets paid a regular salary and is still an official Apple employee... he just doesn't have to go to work. He also still gets his shares and benefits.
I've always thought it was pretty cool of Jobs to do that. Woz was pretty messed up when he walked out. There were bouts of amnesia from the plane crash, and a whole pile of other things going on at the time.

my point is that, especially being the only guy with money, he would know what he was getting into.
obviously he got into and it really wasn't what he thought if he got out that quick.
interesting story though. never knew about this.

if he's that down on his luck, you'd think Jobs or Wozniak would throw him a couple bucks. kinda odd that he's just been completely forgotten about

He's not a beggar either and Jobs and Wozniak are not a charity. This guy basically disappeared from their lives days after they had gotten together and has nothing to do with their success. They have no friendship. They have never had a business relationship lasting more than a few days. He was just the guy who knew mundane adult things like how to register a company and sort out arguments between two guys who were basically kids.
I bet Jobs and Woz haven't even heard about this guy in decades and might not even read this article.

Oh, I didn't know about his accident. I just thought he had a falling out with Steve Jobs or a disagreement from Apple in the early 80s. I didn't know he stayed unil 89. I wonder how much stock he owns.

What evidence do you have to suggest he had mental issues leading to the plane crash? None of this is discussed in his book, only the dramatic effects the temporary memory loss had in the short term in how he handled recovery and subsequently lived out his life.

Well, I guess it's interpretation. I've read "short-term amnesia" but you've read "temporary memory loss."
I think it all means the same thing. Ultimately, the plane crash woke him up and he started to re-examine his life. He left Apple, got married, went back to college, got his degree... etc.
He went back to Apple for a few years afterward before leaving permanently, but he's been on the payroll and listed as an official employee since April Fools in 1976.
