He is the leader of "America's most hated family," a gaunt, craggy-faced preacher who displays "God Hates Fags" signs at the funerals of American troops, gay men and AIDS victims.

He was a "brilliant" civil rights attorney in the 1960s who would take on racial discrimination cases that no other lawyers would touch, say longtime African-American civic leaders in Topeka.

In 2006, members of Phelps' church appeared at the funeral of an American Marine killed in Iraq carrying signs reading "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" and shouting at mourners.

It really is quite surprising this guy is still alive considering the country he lives in. Countless leaders and figureheads have been killed for trying to bring positive change to society, yet this gaylord is alive? You'd think he'd have pissed off more than a few people past the point of no return by now. Maybe he DOES have god on his side!

Fred Phelps has been around forever. This is hardly the least shocking thing he or his crazy church have done (for example, they have signs thanking God for Princess Diana's death). They've been on TV tons of times and they've been given no lack of media attention. In fact the Bush administration came up with a new law that forces the Westboro Baptist Church to stay a certain distance away from the funerals of soldiers when they show up to picket. The fallen heroes bill or something, I think it was.

Youtube "The Most Hated Family In America" if you'd like to see more. It's a pretty good documentary done for the BBC, I believe.

Hopefully somebody is making sure they don't have a stockpile of weapons, ammunition and explosives stored away in the church basement.

Well, thanks for the article. I actually didn't know that Phelps was an attorney who represented negroes in civil right suits early on in his career. That is definitely an intriguing tidbit.

The thing is he pisses off normal people, who aren't generally apt to take to assassination.

You're right, but under the circumstances of where he does it would piss off enough sane people to do insane things. Imagine if he showed up at your family's funeral with his group of disrespectful croonies? Considering many soldiers return nutty, it really is surprising nobody has taken this nazi out.

Where's that British sniper who just set the world record. Old Mr. Phelps take a Sunday stroll one day and all of a sudden his head explaodes like a watermelon. A mile and a half away our freindly neighbourhood sniper walks away and knowing he's done the world a favor. Or at least that's how it would play out in a action movie.

I think it's just a matter of there being enough normal people surrounding even those who come back messed up to bring down the chances of anybody going to extremes. There are certainly those without that support, but I don't know that their rage is really something that gets focused. Bottom line, I wouldn't shed a tear if it happened. Actually, maybe I would, but for the person who would be facing jail over it.

the town where i used to live had several soldiers that were killed in iraq and afghanistan, and phelps and his family came to town each time and picketed their funerals. it really is quite pathetic. thankfully their 'church' is basically his direct descendants and a couple other people. i think once phelps dies, the whole thing falls apart.

I think the reason he's still alive is because the people who usually do the shooting are the same type who actually believe this guy's rhetoric.

Sooner or later he's going to picket the wrong funeral and some red-neck brother of a gay dead soldier will ring his pathetic neck.

I don't think Fred does much picketing himself these days. He leaves much of that up to the younger generations. He seems to be more involved with the making of ridiculous videos for his website, proclaiming God's hate for various countries and celebrities.

Like I said before, its quite funny, because he did do some good things in terms of civil rights laws back in the day going after the Jim Crow laws, fighting Kansas Water and Power. It doesn't redeem him in by a long shot, its just very strange.

Yeah, that's the guy. I literally had tears streaming down my face watching that video (tears of laughter, that is). How does it feel to be a DEMON POSESSED CANADIAN, Justin? I've had years of experience being that and also a fag-enabler. For more information on our faggy Nazi regime, feel free to watch this video:
