Hot Yoga?
Has anyone tried Hot Yoga?
The lady friend is asking if I want to do a few drop in classes with her but I'm new to the whole yoga world. Would it be best if I started off with some simple drop in classes before diving into the hot one?
Also it would probably help me say limber enough for Hockey which is always a bonus.

If you workout at all its a big benefit.
Helps you become more flexible, improve posture, increase tendon strength and the like, plus it can increase your recovery rates.
Big plus if you play hockey.

Lots of women in the class...big plus
It can be tough in the heat...just take a water bottle with ya...if it gets to hard, stop for a minute and take a drink and a take a break

I went to a yoga class imagining hot young females in tight spandex. WRONG. Mostly consisted of middle aged women and men. Not only that, but it was hard and I constantly had a man's ass in my face.
That said, if you can find a 'hot' gym, I could see how Yoga would help.

It's ridiculously hard, and totally worth it. It's a great workout, you feel awesome after, and the ladies can't be beat. Too bad it destroys my back, or else I would still be going

Super speed weight loss too...
The first couple times it feels as though your life is ending, but once you get used to it you will definately benefit if you do any straining physical activities.

Hot yoga is actually better as the increased temperature will increase blood flow which increases the amount of nutrients being delivered to your muscles, which can help with a common problem all hockey players have. Lactic acid buildup. In other words, the 'burn.'
I would suggest contrast showers after you're done for total pure epic win.
Trust me, you'll love it.
I'll send my bill later.

i do hot yoga and really enjoy it. always feel fantastic afterwords. you have to be in pretty decent shape already to be able to do it. I rarely see many people in the class that are over 30 years old as it can be rough on the heart if youre not very healthy due the pretty extreme conditions. bring a towel to cover your mat otherwise youll be slipping halfway through. be prepared to sweat.....a lot.

a favourite yoga clip... from 'rescue me'

it's some german translation (i think) - but go to 2 minutes in and you'll get the drift!

I used to do it at the Bodhi tree in Calgary a couple years back. Awesome work-out, a lot of good lookin' chicks in tight pants/sports bras and I felt great after each class. Honestly, I could get hit by a bus after hot yoga and probably end up ok.
If you find the heat overwhelming just lay flat on your back and breath. The air is cooler closer to the ground.

Awesome thanks for the info, I think i'll take her up on the drop in classes then.
So all I really need is a towel, water bottle and a yoga mat and I should be set?

If you don't have a mat, you can probably get one there

Yea, basically.
You don't burn more calories at a higher room temperature. Sweating more does not mean you're burning more calories.
The benefit of Bikram yoga over regular is that you'll have a more intense cardio workout. Don't go to 3 classes, jump on the scale and start dancing 'cause you've lost 5 lbs. If you make a habit of going 3-5 times a week to hot yoga, that's when you'll see results. It does wonders for muscle flexibility and toning, not to mention will power. Those classes kick your ass sometimes.
Hot Yoga on 17th is a great studio. Not that it isn't busy enough already..

I'm guessing the heat helps you stretch easier too? Considering people get hurt more playing sports on cold days?

I did it as part of some college sports class where you participate in different 'sports' every week. The class was awesome.
As for hot yoga, it was neat, I suppose. I'm not a yoga guy and not flexible so it wasn't all that fun for me. Plus, they had carpet in the studio, and it just reeked. So every time I had to do a double-dog, one leg up, face to the floor, ass in the air move, I had my face in this stinky carpet.
It's extra good if you have some hot girl classmates

I do yoga for kickboxing, really helps with the flexibility and stabalization. Haven't tried hot yoga yet though, a lot of my female friends love it and swear by it though.
